The Mat Mayhem Wrestling Event this Sunday in Flint, Michigan will feature a well-round wrestling experience, with Youth studs going at it during the MYWAY Mat Mayhem Open Tournament, Top prep squads getting it on during the Mat Mayhem HS Duals, and some of the biggest name senior level wrestlers pitted against one another in the Agon II - Homefront Featured Event.
This will all go down on Sunday at Flint's Perani Ice Arena. Amidst all of the, for lack of a better word, mayhem, wrestling fans will get to see two truly great wrestling programs on display all day Sunday with Davison and Lowell, both ranked #1 in the respective divisions.
The Lowell-Davison Dual could very well tell us who the best team is in Michigan this year and could ultimately determine our post-season Power 15 #1 ranked team. Both squads are currently ranked #1 in their division, but neither will cruise to State Titles.
Davison just took over the top spot in D1 after knocking off Detroit Catholic Central in an epic season-opening Assembly Match last week in Novi.
Lowell, meanwhile, is the consensus #1 in D2 with virtually the whole squad coming back from last year's team that finished runner-up to St. Johns.
Lowell, unlike Davison, has yet to show much in team competetion this season, so it will be interesting to see how they compete in the unfriendly confines of Perani Ice Arena this Sunday, as Davison is sure to have the home-crowd advantage.
"Obviously Davison is very well-coached, very hard working, and a very talented program," said Lowell Head Coach Dave Dean. "On one side we know this will be a tough match for us, but on the other side we like the challege of seeing where we need to improve. We will probably do some great things Sunday but we will probably be exposed in certain areas as well."
Davison and Lowell are widely considered as the elite top-to-bottom programs in the State - both being a model of consistency for over a decade now running. Every year it is expected that Davison will be a top contender in D1 and Lowell be a top contender in D2. What is more impressive than the prep success is the overall program success. They both have huge youth clubs with an impressive amount of participation at all levels. They both have big name coaches throughout their programs. They both have a huge fan base of wrestling-savvy parents and spectators. And most of all, they both expect to win, every time they step on the mat.
"Our rivalry is strong with Davison, but we really have a tremendous amount of respect for their coaches and families over there," said Dean, "They do things the right way and they have great people involved with their program, which is what makes them so strong."
Put it all together, and this Sunday is more than just a big dual between two of Michigan's most talented high school teams, it is a showcase of programs as a whole.
Expect to see a fleet of Lowell and Davison youth kids winning titles during the Mat Mayhem MYWAY event before the Cards and Arrows do battle. Then, stick around to see Davison's greatest product, Brent Metcalf, compete in the Agon featured bout. Youth, High School, and Post-Grad, we will get a taste of Davison and Lowell at all levels on Sunday.
Check back for a more in-depth preview of the high school matchups later this week.
