#1 Logan Massa, St. Johns (11)
It hasn’t been a particulary dramatic season for Logan, but over the past couple weeks he has finally been tested. After pinning in his first 20+ matches, Logan bumped up to 160 and wrestled Cadet Freestyle RU Kamal Bey at the DCC Super Duals for a 15-13 decision. However the match wasn’t as close as the victory margin indicates. Logan was up by 7 and pushing for a major in the final minute, but Bey managed to counter one his shots for 5 to close the gap. Logan also got a good test at Hudson Super 16 where he took on 2X D3 State Champ Devin Skatzka. Logan gave up the first takedown, but after that Skatzka’s only points came on escapes, and the final score came out to 13-7 in favor of Massa.
#2 Zac Hall, St. Johns (12)
Much like Logan, Zac hasn’t been in much danger of losing season, but he did get a good test at the CC Super Duals and Hudson Super 16. Wrestling up at 145, Zac got matchups with nationally ranked Larry Early and 3X state finalist Kyle Simaz. Both bouts were competitive, but Zac controlled the scoring, defeating Early 7-3 and Simaz 13-7.
#3 Drew Garcia, Detroit CC (12)
Drew took his first HS loss since January of 2012 this month. However, it’s going to take a lot more than a closely contested 5-3 loss to Davonte Mahomes for Drew to drop. Mahomes came within a couple points of winning a USAW Junior Triple Crown so this summer, so he is definitely a worthy adversary to fall to. Drew was also tested at the Holt Invite, but fought his way out of an early hole to beat 2X Ohio SQ AJ Kowal by an 8-6 score.
#4 Angus Arthur, St. Johns (11)
Angus continues to validate his rankings. He already had several impressive wins on the season, but none was more impressive than his convincing 6-1 decision over nationally ranked 2X state champ Jordan Cooks earlier this month.
#5 Cole Weaver, Hudson (12)
Cole has faced some solid opponents this year, but none have been able to challenge him too strenuously. From an individual standpoint the toughest part of his season is in the books, and I expect nothing less than complete dominance as Cole caps his career with a 3rd D4 state title.
#6 Nick Bennett, Detroit CC (12)
Nick really got tested at the CC Super Duals with a pair of high caliber opponents, and he was certainly up to the task. Competing down at 145lbs, Bennett won a 13-10 barnburner over nationally ranked Larry Early of IL, and then picked up a 1st period fall over IL state champ Chris Garcia.
#7 Justin Oliver, Davison (12)
Justin has had quite the month, and it’s enough for him to move up in the Prep 10. He looked about as good as he ever has at the CC Super Duals, winning a tight 4-3 decision over Cadet FS Champ Isaiah White of Illinois, and a 9-8 slugfest against IL Runner-Up Vince Turk. Then, in a Friday night dual at U of M, Justin got a premier in-state matchup with Zac Hall. He came out on the wrong end of a closely contested 7-5 final score, but was very impressive nonetheless.
#8 Alec Pantaleo, Canton (12)
Alec’s schedule hasn’t challenged him too mightily this season, but with the state tournament right around the corner I don’t expect that too last long. This fall he proved he can continue his dominance against elite opposition, posting a major decision over 3X D2 State Finalist Kyle Simaz at NUWAY Fall Dual Championships.
#9 Lincoln Olson, Davison (11)
Lincoln just keeps scoring points. His only loss this year came in a back and forth battle with nationally ranked OH state champ Anthon Tutolo. Against MI opponents he has yet to really be tested, and cruised to a tech-fall in a meeting with D3 state champ Jerry Fenner.
#10 Jordan Cooks, Davison (12)
Jordan took a pair of losses this month. He fell to Angus Arthur by decision last week, and at the CC Super Duals he lost in UTB to IL State Champ Anthony Ferraro. It wasn’t a terrible loss, but Ferraro did lose to Nick Giese that day, so Cooks slides a bit.
