Dual Synopsis
I’d have to do some research, but it’s hard to imagine there ever being an #8-seed better than this Lake Fenton group. The Blue Devils were a little slow out of the gate, but they have really come on strong in the latter half of the season. I think that they are capable off knocking off anyone outside of the top-3 seeds, but Dundee is just a bit too well rounded from top to bottom. A 7/7 split is attainable if everything goes right for the Blue Devils, but ultimately bonus points will be their undoing. The only way I see Lake Fenton pulling off the biggest quarterfinal upset in recent history is if they can beat Dundee’s Tye Thompson, currently ranked #1 at 171. Lake Fenton has a pair of top-5 171lbrs of their own, but both lost to Thompson last weekend.
Dual Synopsis
There are a few other contenders, but if I had to pick one must-see dual on Friday this would be it. Both teams have some immense firepower, and while GRCC is a bit deeper I think this is a pretty favorable matchup for Swan Valley. From 119-140 GRCC is extremely flexible, and regardless of how they choose to lineup in this stretch there should be some excellent individual matchups. The one that particularly stands out is a potential battle between two of the state’s elite sophomores: state champ Devin Schroder and runner-up Matt Santos. However, while the names might not be as recognizable, I think there’s a good chance the most critical swing match will end up coming at 171lbs between HM’s James Dwenger and AJ Zervoudakis.
Dual Synopsis
This is a rock solid Chippewa Hills squad with good depth across the board, but they will be hard pressed to stack up against Richmond. From 103-145 Chip Hills can hang, but I think Richmond runs away with it from 152 on up. One of the top matchups will come at 145 where #4 Jake VanScoter and #7 Kevin Briscoe are likely to meet. Briscoe is a returning an SQ and the more established of the two, but VanScoter vaulted up in the rankings after breaking out to win a regional title last weekend. Another to watch for will be at 112/119lbs. Both teams have wrestlers that flip back and forth between these weights so its far from a sure thing, but if #1 Aaron Kilburn and #5 Zach King do square off it could end up being a preview of next weekend’s individual semifinals at the Palace.
Dual Synopsis
D3 feels as deep as it has been in quite some time this season, and although they are a bit overmatched here MCC is a really tough team that has had an excellent season despite flying under the radar for much of it. Depending how the lineups play out a 7/7 split is not out of the question for MCC, but they won’t be able to match Allegan’s bonus point output. None of the individual matchups are especially notable, but I am pretty interested to see how freshman stud Jacob Shoop fares against 2X SQ and senior Zane Corey at 130.
