#1 Detroit CC
130 – Evan Toth (SQ-RQ-SQ-SQ)
135 – Eli Joseph (X-X-X-X)
135 – SM2 Greg Johnson (X-X-X-7th)
145 – #10 Malik Amine (5th-2nd-1st-1st)
152 – #3 Nick Bennett (X-X-X-1st)
171 – #2 Drew Garcia (2nd-1st-1st-1st)
189 – #7 Logan Marcicki (1st-X-2nd-X)
215 – #35 Jimmy Russell (X-X-SQ-3rd)
This was an absolutely remarkable class for the Shamrocks, and the hardware backs it up. The group exits the high school ranks having won 3 consecutive D1 team titles, not to mention a runner-up finish during their freshmen season. Toth, Amine, Garcia, and Marcicki were all 4 year starters while Russell, Johnson and Joseph emerged as key contributors in the latter stages of their careers. Then, to ice the cake, Nick Bennett moved home for his senior season and was the only DCC wrestler to go undefeated in 2013-14.
#2 Davison
112 – Jacob Madrigal (RQ-8th-SQ-RQ)
130 – HM2 Derek Humphrey (SQ-RQ-SQ-5th)
135 – HM1 Matt Miller (5th-4th-2nd-4th)
140 – #5 Justin Oliver (1st-1st-3rd-2nd)
145 – #45 Dom Russ (SQ-5th-4th-3rd)
152 – HM1 Thomas Garty (SQ-7th-5th-3rd)
171 – #6 Jordan Cooks (3rd-1st-1st-3rd)
They couldn’t quite get that elusive D1 state championship, but this is the class that brought Davison wrestling back to prominence. After a down stretch, this core group of Cardinals led the program to 3 Battle Creek appearances and a pair of D1 runner-up finishes in their final 2 years of high school. On an individual level they accounted for a remarkable 20 all-state finishes, not to mention 4 individual state titles.
#3 New Lothrop
145 – HM2 Aaron Bauman (SQ-6th-4th-3rd)
160 – #39 Josh Wendling (3rd-4th-1st-1st)
171 – #29 Taylor Krupp (SQ-3rd-2nd-1st)
189 – SM1 Cody Symons (SQ-6th-3rd-3rd)
215 – Dakota Clark (X-SQ-SQ-SQ)
215 – SM2 Owen Wilson (X-8th-SQ-6th)
It was a long journey for this class, but one that ultimately culminated in a D4 state championship. For 3 consecutive years, they lost epic semifinal duals that were all decided in the last match. Lesser groups would’ve folded, but the Hornets persevered, and it paid off with a senior season that saw them unseat 5X reigning champ Hudson to finally claim a state championship.
#4 Hudson
119 – SM2 Isaac Dusseau (6th-3rd-2nd-SQ)
135 – Carlos Randall (X-X-SQ-SQ)
140 – #4 Cole Weaver (2nd-1st-1st-1st)
145 – HM1 JD Waters (X-3rd-1st-1st)
160 – Brian Sumber (X-X-X-7th)
215 – SM1 Jake Morgan (X-RQ-7th-7th)
This class of Tigers has earned their place in history. They managed to reach the D4 state finals in all 4 years of their high schools careers, and captured titles the first 3. The bottom line is that the past 6 years have been a remarkable and historical run for the Hudson program, and this class was absolutely integral to it.
#5 Lowell
125 – SM1 Derek Krajewski (X-SQ-7th-4th)
130 – #42 Bailey Jack (7th-6th-1st-3rd)
152 – Jacob Garcia (X-X-X-RQ)
160 – HM1 Kanon Dean (SQ-SQ-6th-5th)
189 – #20 Garret Stehley (4th-6th-2nd-2nd)
Much like previously mentioned New Lothrop, this is a group that will be best remembered for their resilience and perseverance. As freshmen, sophomores, and juniors this group of Red Arrows saw their season end in Battle Creek at the hands of archrival St. Johns. They were in danger of losing to the Red Wings for a fourth straight time this February, but thanks to some late heroics managed to comeback and vindicate themselves with a D2 state title.
