Spartans start season 2-1 @ EMU Duals

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team went 2-1 at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Saturday, defeating Kent State (32-7) and Olivet College (44-0) while falling to Chattanooga (24-13). Both Kent State and Chattanooga were receiving votes in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll.

Javier Gasca (133 pounds), Roger Wildmo (157), John Rizqallah (184) and Nick McDiarmid (197) each went 3-0 on the day to lead MSU.

The Spartans opened the day with a dominating victory over the Golden Flashes, 32-7, winning eight of 10 matches. Both Garth Yenter (141 pounds) and McDiarmid (197) recorded falls, while Wildmo (157) had a 15-0 technical fall.

MSU won four matches against Chattanooga, but still fell to the Mocs, 24-13. The Mocs used bonus points with a fall, technical fall and major decision to get the 11-point victory. Gasca recorded a major decision at 133 with an 11-3 win over No. 12 Nick Soto, while Wildmo, Rizqallah and McDiarmid also notched wins.

The Spartans won all 10 matches against the Comets in the 44-0 shutout. MSU recorded three pins (Gasca, Rizqallah, Nash) and five major decisions in the final dual of the day against Olivet.

Michigan State returns to action Friday, Nov. 21 at Minnesota.
