The weather is creating all sorts of havoc with the schedules for the Region Duals. Some Regions may have already completed their duals before I am able to get these previews up, but that's ok, we will do them anyway. On a side note, we may also run into some weather issues next weekend for State Duals as well, which isn’t good.
Region 1
Teams: Camden Co, Colquitt, Lowndes, Richmond Hill, Tift, Valdosta
Outlook:
In my opinion this is the toughest Region in the State regardless of classification, so its crazy to think that the main question heading into the weekend is: "Will Camden lose more than 3 individual matches?" Everyone is anticipating the 3rd annual Super Dual between Buford and Camden next weekend, and Camden will come out of Region without a scare. From the looks of everyone's lineups and results, it seems Camden's opponent in the finals will be either Colquitt, Tift, or Richmond Hill. Tift qualified for the Class 6A State Duals last season and went a respectable 2-2. Richmond Hill produced a mild upset over Colquitt last year at the Region Duals and qualified for the Class 7A State Duals with Camden. While Camden went on to win it all again, Richmond Hill was 1-2. Colquitt Stayed home last year for the first time in quite a while, but they look like the team with the inside track towards a date with Camden in the Region Finals. Valdosta and Lowndes are both solid clubs that could potentially qualify for the State Duals if they were in a couple other Regions in 6A. Obviously Camden Co is one of the favorite to win the State Title, but whichever team emerges from this Region as the #2 could make a runa s high as the Consolation semis.
Predictions:
Region 2
Teams: Carrollton, Chapel Hill, Douglas Co, East Coweta, Westlake
Outlook:
Carrollton is the the class of this Region, and will have no trouble advancing out as the #1 team. After that it's a whole lot of not much, Douglas Co won't fill half of the weights and probably wont compete, Westlake will fill most of the weights, but will have numerous forfeits. I'm unsure where East Coweta will fall in regards to weight classes covered. Chapel Hill looks to be the most complete team and will benefit greatly from forfeits throughout the rest of the Region. Carrollton has the pieces to be a tough out for a lot of teams, but I think their ceiling is the consolation semis.
Predictions:
Region 3
Teams: Campbell, Harrison, Hillgrove, McEachern, Paulding Co, Pebblebrook, Osborne, South Cobb
Outlook:
Going into the season, I felt like I had a good handle on how things would shake out in this Region, but I no longer think it is as clear cut as I once did. I still feel like Harrison is the team to beat, their lineup above 157 will be tough for anyone to handle outside of the elite teams in 6A. After Harrison I really don't feel comfortable picking anyone in the2 spot. Campbell has a great record, but its a little misleading due to the level of competition, they have some very talented individuals, but not enough to challenge the Hoyas. Hillgrove is solid from top to bottom, but I'm not sure the have the top tier talent in their lineup to cause the good teams to try and figure out how to navigate their lineup. Paulding Co has some very talented individuals, but I haven't seen much in the way of results for them to feel comfortable with putting them at #2. Osborne, McEachern, Pebblebrook, and South Cobb have all lost duals to Campbell, so that rules them out for the 2 spot. Harrison is good enough to be a factor next week at the State Duals, and could go as high as the consolation finals if they can put it all together, but I don't see anyone else in this region advancing at the State Duals.
Predictions:
Region 4
Teams: Archer, Grayson, Grovetown, Heritage Conyers, Newton, Rockdale, South Gwinnett
Outlook:
Archer is the only team in this Region with the combination of talent and a full lineup to be successful in a Duals tournament. Grayson has several very talented wrestlers, and if they can fill 10 or more weights, they should be in line for a 2nd place finish and a trip to the State Duals. South Gwinnett usually has a full lineup, but they don't have enough talent in that lineup to beat a team that can fill over 10 weights, and Rockdale is much the same. Based on the limited results I can find, Grovetown appears to be the only team that has the numbers and enough talent in those weights to push past everyone else and give Archer a competitive match. At the State Duals, Archer will be a match up nightmare for some of the other State Qualifiers, but they will be handled comfortably by the top tier teams in 6A.
Predictions:
Region 5
Teams: Cherokee, Etowah, Marietta, North Cobb, North Paulding, Walton, Wheeler
Outlook:
There isn't a dominant team in this Region that will just run away and hide with Region crown. Etowah, North Cobb, and Walton all have some solid dual wins, and look to be the favorites to qualify the 2 spots for the State Duals. Both Walton and Etowah have defeated North Cobb, but did not wrestle each other. Etowah's victory over North Cobb was a very slim 5 point margin, while Walton absolutely dominated North Cobb. Obviously things can and do change over the course of a season, but Walton has seemed to show it has the inside track over the other two. North Paulding has been hammered by graduation the past two years and they are undergoing a tough rebuild and Cherokee has a few talented wrestlers but not enough to push past the top three teams in this Region. While both teams that advance out of this Region will be solid, I can't see either of them picking up more than 2 wins at the State Duals.
Predictions:
Region 6
Teams: Alpharetta, Denmark, Forsyth Central, Denmark, Lambert, North Atlanta, North Forsyth, South Forsyth, West Forsyth
Outlook:
This Region is even more up in the air than Region 5 with up to 4 teams having a legitimate shot at making a run to the Region Title. All 4 of those teams have had some impressive performances while at the same time putting up some questionable results as well. West Forsyth and South Forsyth seem to be the two that have been the most consistent, and both of those teams have really good wrestlers through out their lineup, however they both have some significant holes as well. North Forsyth has been very consistent in duals, and they have a great record, but their results in individual tournaments has been average at best. That leads me to believe that some of the better teams will be able to navigate their lineup and get favorable matchups. Denmark started the year off really slow, but they have come on strong lately, and they could be putting things together at the right time. While I don't feel like Lambert or North Atlanta have enough to win the Region, both schools are scrappy enough to be a tough out for the previously mentioned teams, and could sneak in as the 2 out of this Region. It is a down year for most of this Region, and I don't see any of these teams having a strong perfomance at the State Duals.
Predictions:
Region 7
Teams: Berkmar, Brookwood, Duluth, Meadowcreek, Norcross, North Gwinnett, Parkview, Peachtree Ridge
Outlook:
Parkview and Peachtree Ridge are both strong teams with several good, even great wrestlers in their lineup, but neither of them come close to containing the firepower that both North Gwinnett and Brookwood posses. This Region should have the best finals match of any Region in all of 6A with Brookwood and North Gwinnett each having numerous State Placers and State Title contenders. They will be the two teams that come out of this Region, and both of them will do some damage throughout the State Duals bracket next weekend.
Predictions:
Region 8
Teams: Buford, Central Gwinnett, Collins Hill, Dacula Discovery, Mill Creek, Mountain View
Outlook:
Buford is in position to be Camden's counterpart in the State Finals, and there is no one from this Region that will stand in the way of that objective. After Buford, it looks like we will once again have a two team battle for the number 2 spot in the Region. Mill Creek is a team that is held up by its handful of superstars, their Kryptonite is a team that has a solid scrappy wrestler in all 14 weights that can take advantage of their weights where they don't trot out a blue chipper. Mountain View may very well be that team, a team that has a few really good wrestlers too, but also a team that doesn't have any outright walkovers in their lineup. Both teams that come out of this Region will be talented enough to finish in the top 4 at the State Duals.
