The first ever Michigan Grappler Preseason Challenge went down over the weekend! Legacy Center in Brighton played host, as over 200 wrestlers competed in the inaugural event. Freshmen Jacob Holley (Davison) and Austin Rhodes (Yale) were impressive, winning 106lbs and 157lbs, respectively. Holley teched and pinned his way to a championship against some tough competition, while Rhodes beat state placers Tim Hubert and Tyler Densmore on his way to a first place finish.
Another freshman, Cael Tyler (Roscommon HS), looked fantastic at 175lbs before dropping a fall to state placer Louis Smith (Three Rivers) in the finals. Tyler beat state placer Avery Lane (Dundee) by a 10-5 decision first round, and he pinned state qualifier McKenney in the semis. Smith pinned his way through the tournament, with all first period falls.
With the Preseason Challenge now wrapped up, we look forward to another fantastic high school season! The Grappler Gold Invitational will be opening weekend of the season, on December 6th at Hartland High School.
