The Super 32 Challenge began in 2000 and has now turned into the premier preseason high school event in the world. New York’s first Super 32 All-American was crowned in 2005 when Paul Paddock of Warsaw finished 4th at 171 lbs. Since that point New York has put 94 high school boys on the podium, and with the recent addition of the girls tournament, have already churned out 14 high school girls All-Americans.
2017 was the first year that New York crowned a girls Super 32 All-American with Sofia Macaluso, Mia Macaluso, Chloe Cabrera, and Hailey Cancelleri all earning All-American honors that year. Six years later after those women broke through for New York, in 2023, Adriana Palumbo would mark the first New York woman to win a belt when she captured 160lbs gold.
The Empire State as always is bringing the heat to Greensboro this weekend. The high school boys are searching for their first Super 32 champion since 2022 when PJ Duke won the belt, while the high school girls are looking to add another belt to their showcase.
For those interested in New York Super 32 history – every single All-American for the high school men and women are located at the bottom of this article.

Boys Best Bets
Gavin Mangano (Shoreham-Wading River)
Mangano is one of only a handful of kids who earned All-American honors last year at Super 32 in a weight above 126lbs that was either a freshman or a sophomore. The latest Penn State commit is fresh off an injury at the state tournament in February, and looked every bit like his old self at the Journeymen Fall Classic a few short weeks ago. Mangano comes in as the 3rd seed at the weight and the 5th ranked individual in the country. At the tournament a year ago, the KDTC product came in slated as the #10 seed and made the quarterfinals, knocking off the #7 seed (and top 100 recruit in the Class of 2025) in Billy Townson in the process. He would later get the best of Adrian DeJesus who is now wrestling at Cornell en route to his 6th place finish.
Dunia Sibomana (Long Beach)
The Tarheel commit is also a returning Super 32 All-American after he finished 6th place last year in the Greensboro Coliseum and looks to move up the podium once again this year. Sibomana comes off a Fargo showing where he came just short of earning All-American honors in the Junior Freestyle division; his only losses coming to Titan Friederichs and Nico DeSalvo, both being ranked top 15 in the country. Now currently ranked 14th in the country, he enters the tournament seeded 10th. If the tournament goes chalk, he’d have a rematch with Alex Rozas in the round of 16, who beat Sibomana in the NHSCA Finals in the spring. If he gets through Rozas, that’d set up a match with #2 ranked Rocklin Zinklin for a shot to make the semifinals.
Griffin LaPlante (St. Francis)
It doesn’t matter whether freestyle or folkstyle, the St. Francis Red Raider has been phenomenal throughout the entire off-season and now pre-season. LaPlante went from being unranked most of last year to now being ranked as high as 3rd in the country at 157lbs. Over the course of this summer he’s beaten several kids who were ranked in the top 5 at the time of the win including Justus Heeg, Lorenzo Alston, and now Reagan Milheim. In a loaded Fargo bracket with some graduating seniors he also made the blood round, then followed it up with a Journeymen Fall Classic title a couple weeks ago. LaPlante is a great bet to make the podium, but is also equal parts a contender to be the first Super 32 champ New York has crowned since PJ Duke in 2022. Another contender to win the first boys high school belt since PJ Duke is (and they’re both in the same weight)…
Camryn Howard (Bellport)
Howard won a state title as a freshmen when he pinned Cornell commit Samson McKissick-Staley (Pittsford) in just over a minute. He would follow that up with an NHSCA Freshman Nationals title shortly after, but then lost in the blood round at U17 World Team Trials in Vegas. If there was any doubt surrounding how good Howard is, he surely put that to rest when he won a Fargo 16U Freestyle Stop Sign in July where he beat both Justus Heeg and Asher Bacon. Shortly after Fargo, Howard was ranked second in the nation by FloWrestling where he received a bit of criticism on the #2 ranking. If there was still any doubt on how great the Long Island sophomore is, he proved all of the doubters wrong when he beat #1 ranked Wyatt Medlin at Who’s #1 for the #1 ranking in the country last weekend. Howard enters the tournament as the 4th seed at 157lbs even after that win over Medlin. Similar to LaPlante, the KD Trained kid out of Bellport has a great shot at winning the 157lbs bracket this weekend after a 5-2 showing a year ago. Howard vs LaPlante 157lbs final for all the marbles would be a great gift this weekend!
Will Soto (Newburgh)
Stone cold Will Soto is back for another run at 106lbs and looks to build on his 5-2 showing at Super 32 a year ago. When competing at 106lbs Soto has proven he is one of the best as demonstrated by his 16U Fargo Freestyle runner-up finish this summer. He enters the tournament as the 4th seed and is currently ranked 7th in the country. Assuming he makes the semifinals he’d have to get through U17 World Champion Ariah Mills, and if he makes the finals he’s likely wrestle another World Champ in Keegan Bassett.
Devin Downes (Plainedge)
The senior out of Section VIII catapulted himself onto the national stage when he won a state title as a sophomore after qualifying for the tournament as a freshman. Since then, Downes has turned into a massive recruit for the Maryland Terrapins and has been dominant at the national level. Something that took a lot of people by surprise was his win over Cadet World Teamer Tanner Hodgins of New Jersey at last year’s Beast of the East. He would then go on to make the finals of NHSCA Junior Nationals and then would come up short of making the podium at Fargo, losing to kids who ultimately made the podium (Michael Boyle, 2nd) and Aiden Cooley (5th). Coming in as the #8 seed at 190 lbs, Downes is well positioned to go on a run this weekend.
Don’t Sleep On…
Ashten Haley (Cobleskill-Richmondville)
He’s already the 8th seed this weekend but not enough good things can be said about how Ashten Haley looked at the Grappler Fall Classic and post-surgery. After making the finals last year as a sophomore, he got surgery and came back at Waterway Duals just a month ago. He beat returning Fargo finalist (and teammate) Landyn Shaffer in the quarterfinals at GFC before beating the Fargo champ in Jovani Solis in the semifinals. Haley has earned a national ranking and sits in the top 20 at 138 lbs. With him being down at 132 this weekend, he’s definitely dangerous, and certainly hitting his stride at the right time.
Chris Noto (Honeoye Falls-Lima)
Noto is one of the more unrecognized wrestlers at the national level in New York and believe he is much more deserving than a 29 seed this weekend. The Lock Haven commit beat Fargo National Finalist Landyn Shaffer head-to-head at the state tournament this year and earned his second NHSCA All-American distinction this spring. At Fargo he competed in the Junior Freestyle division with his only losses coming to graduating seniors in Manny Saldate (#71 Class of 2025, Oregon State commit) and Deven Casey (#155 Class of 2025, Penn commit). He beat 2x Fargo All-American Geronimo Rivera in the midst of the tournament as well. At the Grappler Fall Classic, Noto placed 8th despite getting injured at the tournament and was competitive in his match against #1 ranked Antonio Mills.
Matty McDermott (Smithtown East)
McDermott currently sits in the top 50 of the sophomore class rankings nationally and made the finals of the state tournament as a freshman, only losing to West Virginia wrestler Luke Satriano. He made the finals of NHSCA’s shortly after and placed 3rd at the 15U US Open. Just a couple weeks ago he also made the finals of the Journeymen Fall Classic and beat nationally ranked Christian Jelle in the process. McDermott wrestles closer matches where we typically see 4-0, 6-1, or 5-1 results. With the ability to stay in every match, he’s always a threat.
Maverick Beckwith (Norwich)
The latest commit for the Black Knights has found the podium in almost every event he’s been to. He’s been impressive at the state tournament ever since he was in middle school. In addition, he was a match shy of placing at NHSCA Sophomore Nationals (only losses coming to All-Americans), and came home with a mini stop-sign in Fargo after entering the tournament unseeded (and missing weight). Just a few weeks ago, he made the finals of the Grappler Fall Classic. The Section IV standout is always a threat at a national tournament.
Wyatt Boice (Minisink Valley)
Boice was impressive during the 2024-25 season en route to a third place finish at the state tournament and followed it up with earning All-American honors at NHSCA’s in the spring. He had a very competitive Grappler Fall Classic tournament that was cut short due to injury, albeit he still placed 8th. In his match against 2x Fargo All-American Jay’Den Williams at GFC he was very much so in the match up until the end, and even got out to an early lead. Keep an eye on Boice this weekend.
Girls Best Bets
Charlie Wylie (Port Jervis)
Wylie is essentially a lock to place in every tournament she enters into and has proven that with a Fargo Stop Sign, Fargo Runner-Up honors, winning U17 Pan Am trials, among almost any other accolade you can think of. Anywhere she goes she’s always impressive. Coming in seeded 5th, her path to the finals would include a Fargo finals rematch against #4 Kayla Batres (CT), and if she gets through Batres, that would set up a match against #1 Morgan Turner (IL).
Gigi Sullivan (Monroe Woodbury)
The incoming freshmen out of Section IX is well-positioned to be one of the next women’s superstars for New York wrestling. She decided to compete against the boys in the individual postseason this year and was the first woman to ever qualify for the New York Division I State Tournament where she placed ahead of Valley Central’s Evan Gomez and Andrew Uszenski. At Fargo this year she came in as the #6 seed and would beat the #3 seed Kirra Mitchel in the quarters and the #2 seed in Morgan Hyland in the semifinals before dropping her finals match to Hailey Delgado, who’s now ranked as high as 5th in the country. She will enter Super 32 this weekend as the #6 seed and has grown a bit as she will be competing at 118 lbs.
Haley Gonzales (Hicksville)
A former Fargo champ in Gonzales coming in as the #8 seed is a potential bracket buster for all parties involved. Gonzales won Fargo in 2024 and then followed it up with a state title in MVP Arena this spring. Looks like Gonzales took some time off this summer as she didn’t compete at the Blatnick or Fargo, but was back in action a couple weeks ago at the Journeymen Women’s World Classic where she took 4th and was wrestling up at 128lbs. Her only losses were to women who were nationally ranked, and she notched a nice win over a German wrestler in the quarterfinals.
Don’t Sleep On…
Julianna Hernandez (Rocky Point)
Hernandez is a returning Super 32 All-American and comes in seeded 11th this year. She placed 8th at 15U Women’s Nationals and won her state tournament this year that included a win over another nationally ranked opponent in Sara Pauls. Hernandez didn’t compete at Fargo this year, but just went 7-1 at Columbus Day Duals and looked very impressive. She’s always likely to make the podium at a national tournament.
Sara Pauls (Minisink Valley)
The 132lbs bracket is loaded at Super 32 but Pauls has always shown she’s a contender at every tournament she’s at. Following her runner-up finish at the state tournament, she avenged her lost to Lily Blenk from earlier in the year at the Blatnick where she pinned her in the finals. At Southeast Regionals she would pin her way through the tournament before a strong Fargo showing where she came a couple matches shy of placing. She enters the tournament as the #17 seed and will look to make a run to the podium this weekend.
Sammy Massey (Mt. Markham)
As Coach Nate Leonard said in his interview at the Grappler Fall Classic, Sammy Massey is going to light the world on fire as she continues to turn into a remarkable wrestler. As just a 7th grader she won the New York state tournament this year and went on to go undefeated at 15U National Duals in Indianapolis this summer, and did so in dominating fashion where she either pinned or teched everyone she faced. She should be nationally ranked right now and enters the tournament unseeded at 95lbs. She is going to be a problem for any seeded wrestler she draws right off the rip. Assuming she performs how she usually does, she’ll be a name we start to hear for the next five years on every national outlet.
Victoria Alvarado (Warwick)
Alvarado placed 6th at Fargo in 2024, followed it up with a dominating high school season where she won a state title, and then went to Women’s Nationals where she made the blood round wrestling up a weight class. She was back down to 145lbs at Fargo this summer where she once again took 6th. At Columbus Day Duals she put together an impressive 7-1 record. Alvarado just recently broke into the national rankings, and as always she’s a contender to podium as historically demonstrated.
Gabi Severin (Bethpage)
Severin made the quarterfinals at Fargo this summer before dropping her next two matches to Savannah Witt (PA) and Kennedy Russell (CA). Both girls she lost to were nationally ranked in high school and had recently graduated, with Witt having previously competed at Who’s #1 and being a top ranked wrestler in the nation. If you go to Fargo and your only losses are to girls who are now college level, that’s pretty dang impressive. She’s not getting any love in the pre-seeds, but she’s definitely someone capable of putting together a great showing and placing at Super 32.
