NWCA All-Star Classic
Each year the NWCA All-Star Classic signals the start of the new college wrestling season. New York was represented well at this years event, which was held at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway, New Jersey. Buffalo natives in Zaynah McBryde and Latifah McBryde would represent New York on the girls side, while Minisink Valley graduate Zack Ryder and Cornell’s Simon Ruiz would represent the state on the boys side.
Zaynah McBryde (Life University) would wrestle Katie Lange (Grand Valley) in a battle of returning NAIA versus NCAA champions from a year ago, where McBryde would drop that match 11-3.
Shortly after her sister Latifah McBryde (Life University) would wrestle Bella Mir (North Central) in what would be a “rubber match” of previous years. Both McBryde and Mir are ranked #1 in the country in the NAIA and NCAA polls, however, Mir would bump up a weight from 145lbs to 160lbs to make that happen. Mir would end up becoming victorious, winning 2-2 on criteria.
On the boys side of things, returning NCAA All-American Simon Ruiz (Cornell) would get us going as he squared off against Lenny Pinto of Rutgers (formerly at Nebraska). Pinto has made the blood round twice at the NCAA tournament. Ruiz would get dug into a 6-2 hole early as he gave up two first period takedowns, but would end up clawing his way back in the second and third period. Driven by a second period rideout and a set of swipes, he would then escape in the third period and ice the match with a late takedown. He’d ultimately emerge victorious, 9-6.
To close out the night, Minisink Valley graduate Zack Ryder would don a new singlet this year as he is now representing the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. The redshirt freshman would wrestle against returning NCAA All-American Jaxon Smith (Maryland), who is currently ranked 4th in the country, in what would be his first test of his collegiate career. “Re-attack Zack” would put on a clinic, ultimately stringing together four takedowns en route to a 14-4 major decision victory over the All-American!
