Josh Barr became one of just 35 four-time state champs in MHSAA history, and he is just the 5th to ever win all four championships at 152lbs and up. The Davison grad finished his prep career with a record of 131-1 and had two team state titles to go with his four individual golds.
After winning a Junior Freestyle national championship last July (his second Stop Sign in Fargo), Barr entered his Senior season ranked #1 in the country, and he ultimately graduated ranked #2 in the country at 170lbs. Barr also competed twice at Who's Number One and was a runner-up at the U20 World Team Trials.
Barr will join former Davison teammate and fellow 4x state champ Alex Facundo at Penn State this Fall.
Coach Hancock led the Shamrocks to their 16th overall MHSAA team title and the 9th under his leadership. For the 7th year in a row, the Shamrocks qualified all 14 wrestlers for the individual state tournament. This year, they put 12 on the podium. More impressively, DCC had a staggering 8 individuals reach the state finals, with 7 becoming 2023 D1 state champs. In 16 years with Detroit Catholic Central, Coach Hancock has had a remarkable 65 individual state champions to accompany his 9 team titles.
Detroit CC beat the other three team champions this year, including Lowell (44-11), Dundee (51-18), and Hudson (48-16). Additionally, the Shamrocks beat D1 runner-up and nationally ranked Hartland 48-15 and 41-21. CC also won the Catholic Central Invite and Wadsworth Invitational over nationally ranked host Wadsworth.
