#5 Alim Muhammad (Big Rapids) vs. Brody Rosten (Negaunee)
Muhammad is clearly to beat, but after that it’s an absolute logjam. Lewandowski had an unreal district performance, and it looks the move down from 145 was a wise one. However, with the competition level on this chart he is no lock to get out.
Predicted Finish – Muhammad, Lewandowski, Merrick, Toomey

#5 Tristen Zienkiewicz (Farwell) vs. Cody Jensen (SMCC)
#8 Logan Emery (Clare) vs. Jacob Williams (Manistee)
#4 Boyd Hubbard (Alma) vs. Michael Phipps (Grayling)
Hubbard picked up a huge OT win last week over Zienkiewicz, and I would say he’s officially established himself as a serious title contender. However, despite his district title I think Hubbard has the tougher draw with Emery in the semis who’s lone district loss was an 8-7 battle to Zienkiewicz in the semis.
Predicted Finish – Hubbard, Zienkiewicz, Emery, Brokshire

#8 Kole Krauss (GRCC) vs. Tanner Phares (Comstock)
#9 Dan Sayfie (GRCC) vs. Adam Bolyard (Otsego)
#3 Foster Karmon (Allegan) vs. HM Dylan Felt (Shelby)
Karmon’s only loss on the year was the result of a rather fluky pin, and I think the odds that anyone here beats are pretty slim. Lambdin really proved something at districts last weekend, battling his way to a pair of narrow wins over Krauss, and Sayfie. A likely rematch with Krauss in the semis looms large, and whoever drops that one will be looking at a bloodround matchup with returning SQ Felt.
Predicted Finish – Karmon, Krauss, Lambdin, Sayfie
130
#6 Jesse Scheidel (Belding) vs. Xavier Mulac (South Haven)
HM Jwan Britton (Whitehall) vs. Brandon Watson (Otsego)
#7 Blake Russo (GRWC) vs. Jacob White (Paw Paw)
#5 Zane Corey (Allegan) vs. Bryce Buck (Portland)
Scheidel shook this weight up big time at districts by handing last year’s runner Russo his first loss of the season. I think both semifinals will be dynamite, and I would definitely keep an eye on Britton as a sleeper to emerge from the top half of the bracket. As for Russo, I think last weekend served as a wake up call, and he rights the ship with a regional title.
Predicted Finish – Russo, Scheidel, Corey, Britton

#9 Michael Walker (Belding) vs. Wyatt Polmateer (Parchment)
#7 Forrest Courtright (Shelby) vs. Tony Ruiz (South Haven)
#6 Chase Beard (Allegan) vs. HM Trip Thommen (Dundee)
Upset Alert! Top-ranked Dyke hasn’t been particularly dominant this season, but he’s managed to win a lot of barn burners in order to maintain his spotless record. That’s a hard act to keep up for an entire season, and sooner or later most guys drop one. I think this may the weekend it happens, largely because I am really, really high the freshman Beard.
Predicted Finish – Beard, Dyke, Walker, Courtright

HM Hunter Scott (Portland) vs. Noah Fayling (Parchment)
#5 Hunter Shaw (Whitehall) vs. Nate Merrill (South Haven)
#9 Tristan Howard (Dowagiac) vs. HM Ross Hulick (GRCC)
It’s an age-old narrative for fans of HW wrestling in the state of Michigan: 5 guys, 4 spots. Returning SQ’s Shaw, Howard and Hulick seemed like the natural picks to fill the remaining 3 spots after #1 Geurink, but last weekend Scott through his hat in the ring as well by knocking off Hulick. On a separate note, Shaw pushed Geurink to overtime last weekend, so it looks like his decision to move up from 215 was a wise one. Right now he seems like a fringe contender, but one upset this weekend and he quickly becomes a frontrunner.
Predicted Finish – Geurink, Shaw, Howard, Hulick

#2 Brendan Abrigo (Manchester) vs. Dillan McGinnis (Ovid Elsie)
#10 Drew Mandell (Dundee) vs. Walter Will (Durand)
#6 Ethan Woods (Manchester) vs. Quintin Lopez (Williamston)
#1 Tristan Serbus (Corunna) vs. Spencer Good (Lumen Christi)
As far as favorites go, Serbus and Abrigo are about as clear-cut as it gets. The two have spent the entire season atop the rankings, and whoever wins Saturday is without a doubt the guy to beat at the Palace. That being said, the frosh Woods has really came on strong late in the season, and I see him being a tough out for Serbus in the semis.
Predicted Finish – Serbus, Abrigo, Woods, Mandell
112
#2 Ken Reinhart (Dundee) vs. Hank Richter (Durand)
#9 Hunter Corcoran (Lake Fenton) vs. HM Hunter Lajness (Monroe Jefferson)
#10 Emilio Campos (Corunna) vs. HM Robert Grysko (Grass Lake)
#3 Arthur Payne (Montrose) vs. Theron Singles (Leslie)
A state placer last season, Reinhart has taken it to a whole other level in his junior campaign. He’s climbed all the way to the #2 spot, and on Saturday he will have one of his biggest tests yet against Payne, last year’s D4 runner-up. During the season Reinhart went 2-1 against Hamdan, the wrestler who defeated Payne in last year’s state final, and it’s that level of competition that I think will make the difference for Reinhart in this matchup. Beyond that, I truly think all of the other 6 wrestlers are very much in the mix for the final 2 spots.
Predicted Finish – Reinhart, Payne, Grysko, Corcoran
119
#2 Kanen Storr (Leslie) vs. Keith Wirostek (Chesaning)
#8 Anthony DeLaRosa (Lumen Christi) vs. HM Drew Cox (Birch Run)

#6 Zach Blevins (Dundee) vs. Kolin McAlpine (Chesaning)
HM Nick Dettling (Manchester) vs. Adam Grim (Birch Run)
Hunter Hackworth (Grass Lake) vs. Tyler Coleman (Ovid Elsie)
#2 Jerry Fenner (Birch Run) vs. Kyle Hughes (Monroe Jefferson)
I really have to restrain myself from taking Blevins here. Fenner is the defending champ, and most all of Blevins success this season came at 119lbs. All that considered, there is just something about the way Blevins competes that makes him hard to pick against. The sophomore is vastly improved from last year’s 8th place finish, and has a way putting guys to their back from every position imaginable.
Predicted Finish – Fenner, Blevins, Dettling, Hughes

#1 Zehlin Storr (Leslie) vs. Tyler Childs (Birch Run)
#10 Brad Scholl (Dundee) vs. HM Jared Weisenberger (Chesaning)
#2 Doug Rojem (Dundee) vs. Ean Taylor (Birch Run)
HM Dylan Briss (Corunna) vs. Matt Cuevas (Manchester)
Big rematch here. Storr and Rojem both are defending state tiles, and the odds favor them squaring off again on Saturday night at the palace two weeks from now. Storr nipped Rojem 5-3 in OT in their meeting last week, and now comes the obligatory “adjustment match”. Both guys have felt each other out, and have had a week to think over their tactics. I lean towards Storr’s ability to initiate offense, but Rojem has managed to swing matches with his top game before.
Predicted Finish – Storr, Rojem, Scholl, Childs
145

HM Cody Sanders (Lake Fenton) vs. Anthony St. Andre (Monroe Jefferson)

Predicted Finish – Coval, Franklin, Sanders, Cooper
160
#10 Justin Fratrick (Grass Lake) vs. Tyler Thayer (Corunna)
#3 Carson Whaley (Lake Fenton) vs. Alex Phillips (Ida)
HM Austin Martin (Manchester) vs. Cody Proudfoot (Perry)
#2 Jared Elliott (Birch Run) vs. HM Donny Mandell
Despite the fact that he is probably my top pick to win a state title at this weight, I am putting Elliott on upset alert in round 1. Hard to believe against a kid that took 4th in his district. Mandell has a confident upper body attack and the build to match it. He’s a tough out for pretty much any 160lbr in the state, and this matchup is definitely not what Elliot was imagining as he stood atop the district podium last Saturday. However, Elliott is on an absolute roll right now, and has extended his victory margin each time around in 3 wins over Whaley this season.
Predicted Finish – Elliott, Whaley, Mandell, Fratrick
171
#1 Tye Thompson (Dundee) vs. #7 Justin Sloan (Chesaning)
#5 Trent Hilger (Lake Fenton) vs. HM Michael Golding (Manchester)
#6 Alex Elasivich (Montrose) vs. Ryan Heiserman (Dundee)
#3 Andy Donoho (Lake Fenton) vs. Robert Eineader (Napolean)
Absolute monster of a weight class, this is up there with any chart in the state. As the season has progressed Thompson has emerged as the frontrunner, but that status will be put to the test. So far most of his big wins have come against opponents outside of D3, so now we will get to see how matches up with those vying for the same prize. I think both Lake Fenton will be a handful for him: Hilger is a freak freshman huge upside, and Donoho was a beat all year at 189.
Predicted Finish – Thompson, Donoho, Hilger, Elasivich
189
#1 Hunter Dunn (Monroe Jefferson) vs. Brandon Blair (Corunna)
Cody Cocklin (Corunna) vs. Tucker Dillon (Napolean)
#2 Teddy Warren (Dundee) vs. Tyler Hart (Williamston)
#7 Ethan Barnette (Montrose) vs. Henry Arbogast (Manchester)
After missing the majority of the season with injury, Warren is finally back to defend his title. However, Dunn beat him twice during the past week. As Warren continues to get mat time under his belt I have no doubt he will grow more comfortable and improve, but if Dunn can beat him 3 times in a row he will be hard to pick against at the Palace.
Predicted Finish – Dunn, Warren, Barnette, Cocklin
215

#1 Aaron Kilburn (Richmond) vs. Travis Harding (Pinconning)
HM Anthony Pizzo (Clawson) vs. Chandler White (Frankfort)
#7 Joey Nemeck (Capac) vs. Jeffrey Luth (Carrollton)
#6 KJ Suitor (Swan Valley) vs. Cody Keller (Richmond)
Suitor has had a dominant season, but he hasn’t really faced enough top competition to gage accurately gauge how serious of a title contender he is. That will change in a hurry. The semis will pit him against senior and returning SQ at this weight Nemeck, and if he advances he will then matchup with Kilburn who is currently a definitve favorite to win this weight.
Predicted Finish – Kilburn, Suitor, Nemeck, Pizzo
119
HM Jake Frangendakis (Capac) vs. Landon Honsinger (Hemlock)
#9 Josh Hernandez (Swan Valley) vs. Brandon Downs (Clawson)

HM Graham Barton (Richmond) vs. HM Kolten Radaz (Freeland)
#4 Marshall Conley (Caro) vs. Andre Bourlier (Algonac)
HM Dustin Hunsucker (Capac) vs. HM Dan Rocheleau (Caro)
#1 Matt Santos (Swan Valley) vs. Jason Johnson (Flat Rock)
Santos is the guy to beat at this weight in D3, and Conley is a good bet to meet him in the finals for a 3rd consecutive weekend. After that it will be an absolute battle between the 4 HM’s. Hunsucker missed nearly all of last season, but was a state placer in 2012 that seems to be regaining form. He lost by fall to Barton in the district finals who, In typical Richmond fashion, is coming on strong late in the season.
Predicted Finish – Santos, Conley, Barton, Radaz
130
#3 Santos Alvarez (Algonac) vs. HM Gerad Bott (Swan Valley)
#9 Josh Schlack (Freeland) vs. Jack Pyle (MLN)
#4 Grant Turnmire (Almont) vs. Graham Fitkin (Freeland)
#8 Nick Torres (Bullock Creek) vs. Jacob Barwikowski (Grosse Isle)
No doubt that some very worthy wrestlers won’t be advancing from this chart. Bott has had a stellar freshman campaign, but will almost assuredly need to beat a returning state placer in order to crack the top 4.
Predicted Finish – Alvarez, Turnmire, Torres, Schlack
135
#2 Jacob Engle (Armada) vs. DeAndre Moore (Bridgeport)
Matt Hoffman (Meridian) vs. Branden Fisher (Flat Rock)

#4 Nick Burg (Richmond) vs. #8 Josh Flores (Swan Valley)
#7 Charlie Ferens (Freeland) vs. Antonio Raona (Madison)
Ian Detroyer (Capac) vs. Malachi Breece (Millington)
#6 Adam McCann (Bullock Creek) vs. James Nivision
Based on his district results Flores doesn’t appear to be healthy right now, and his status for Saturday will be the X-factor in determing how this weight plays out. Even if he’s banged up he should still be able to slide into the 4th, but at his best this is a chart Flores is capable of winning.
Predicted Finish – Burg, McCann, Flores, Ferens
145
