Michigan Blue put together an outstanding tournament, finishing 6th in Greco.
Michigan Blue finished Day 1 with a 2-1 record in pool play after a first round bye. After beating Pennsylvania Red 62-13, Michigan Blue had a tough dual with a solid California team, with the winner reaching the pool finals. Through 14 matches, Michigan Blue trailed 32-31. However, Nate Carter, Quinten Cassiday, and Blake Sloan came up with three straight wins to give the Blue team a huge 45-33 win over last year's Greco national championship team.
In the pool finals, Michigan Blue ran into an extremely tough Illinois team that is one of the favorites to win the tournament. Illinois would take that dual by a score of 54-18. Because Michigan had already beaten California, no true second dual was needed, which put Michigan into the gold (championship) pool.
Michigan drew a loaded Iowa team first round in that pool. Iowa won that dual 50-23. Highlights of the dual included Nick Sorrow beating Dawson Youngblut, and Blake Sloan beating Nolan Fellers, both Top 100 freshmen in the country. Michigan then lost 46-25 to a loaded Pennsylvania team.
Michigan would get back in the win in an exciting 38-36 dual against Utah. Michigan started off hot with 5 straight wins down low (Pilot Swab, Layne Martin, Jarrett Smith, Mason Haines, and Jaron Bensinger), and they limited bonus points up top to hold on for the win.
In the 5th place match, Michigan dropped a 41-31 dual. In a back-and-forth dual, it was Minnesota who won 3 of the last 4 matches to lock up 5th place.
Freestyle action begins today.
Michigan went 2-3 on Day 1, with wins over Arkansas and Kansas Blue. Of their three losses, two of them came by 4 and 5 points against South Dakota and North Dakota, respectively. Joelan Coyer, Meyer Murray, and Julius Pacheco led the way on day one, all going an undefeated 3-0. Brady Vaughan led the team in wins, going 4-1 on the day.
On Day 2, Michigan Red had just one dual. In the 3rd place match of the Purple/Gray pool, Michigan dominated South Carolina, finishing with 66-5 win.
