Round of 16: #3 Brody DiCaprio (Burnt Hills) vs. #14 Tyler Conzo (Smithtown West)---Both 30-match winners during the 2023-2024 campaign, NYWN actually had the 8th grade phenom out of Suffolk County [Conzo] higher on our large school polls for the majority of the year, as he entered the postseason holding the #2 overall spot at the lightest weight class....Each a sectional finalista few weeks ago, DiCaprio claimed the S2 crown for the first time in his scholastic career, while Conzo was a runner-up in Section XI...
Round of 16: #8 Ethan Andreula (Long Beach) vs. #9 Vincent Orandello (MacArthur)---A rematch of the past two Section 8 County finals, every time these two young standouts go to battle, the match seems to end up being an instant classic, as was the case in the most recent match-up where the returning NYS 7th [Andreula] was able to squeak out a 3-2 decision to repeat as the champion in Nassau...While the rivalry has gone primarily in the favor of the Marine 8th grader the past two seasons, it is worth noting that 2023 State Qualifier, Orandello, did muster a split at the Eastern States Classic last month...New York Wrestling News Ranked both student-athlete in the top-5 of the 101-pound weight class, so this is absolutely a bout that we would have predicted would have taken place at least one round later!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #8 Will Russell (Manhasset) vs. #9 Tristan Levin (Tottenville)---Two wrestlers that we both feel have a great shot at being on the podium this coming Saturday, for one of them, a win at this initial stage could be the launching point they need to go very far in the bracket....Ranked as high as #3 at 116 in our polls before dropping down to 108 for the postseason, Russell has had a banner sophomore season, compiling a 38-3 record with all of his blemishes occurring to former and/or defending state titlists, including a loss in the S8 finals to 2022 State Champ, Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez....Levin, who is halfway through sweeping PSAL gold (2-for-2) was a blood rounder on South Pearl Street a season ago and has been even better as a 10th grader, winning 37 matches, highlighted by a 6th-place showing at the ESC...
Quarterfinals: #2 Cooper Merli (Newburgh Free Academy) vs. #7 Gino Manta (Hauppauge)---Without question the biggest threat on Friday to the defending champ's [Merli] bid to repeat, when these two superstars squared off in January at the Eastern States Classic, it was Merli emerging with a very hard fought 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals en route to a runner-up showing [7th for Manta]...Ranked 3rd and 7th respectively the final edition of our polls, you can never pick against a reigning king, but the two-time Suffolk medalist [runner-up in '23]/2023 State BR, Manta is certain to make things interesting!!...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quarterfinals: #3 Anthony Serverino (Lindenhurst) vs. #6 Austin Zimmerman (St. Joe's Collegiate)---A match on paper that we have going the other way, Zimmerman at #7 is slightly higher on our board than the #8 Serverino....Both will step on the mats this weekend with plenty of momentum as Severino added to his breakout sophomore campaign by winning his first S11 crown , while the Edinboro bound senior for the Marauders [Zimmerman] became a four-time CHSAA State Champion....In terms of bullet points, the returning NYS DI 5th/2x ESC medalist out of the Catholic league has the better resume; but Severino has looked unstoppable throughout 2023-2024, with his lone imperfection (34-1) occurring up at 124 pounds...Should Zimmerman be successful in pulling off the upset, he would become just the second wrestler in school history to be a multi-time Federation State placer (Chris Smith; 3x in 1991-1993 at 250)!
Quarterfinals: #2 Carlos Salazar (Hewlett) vs. #10 Brayden Kellison (Williamsville North/East)----A potential double upset dip is the freshman out of S6, Kellison, who NYWN had in the #4 spot of our rankings...A bronze medalist at the sectional level in 2022 before missing the postseason last year, Kellison has been nothing short of outstanding in his first season in a new home (moved from Newfane to Williamsville North), as he has tallied a 21-1 record, including hoisting hardware at the Section 6 Championships two weeks ago!!!....While we chose to focus on a possible quarterfinal match-up with 2024 S8 champ/2023 State Qualifier/2024 ESC 4th, Salazar (14th ranked by us], the truth is that he will have his hands equally full in the round of 16, as he squares off with our #9 man/2023 State 8th, Ryan Cieslinski Spencerport)..Expect for Cieslinski to be wrestling with a chip on his shoulder/something to prove after settling for silver at the Section 5 championships; thus adding to the challenge for Kellison!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quarterfinals: #4 Shane Dobbins (Plainedge) vs. #5 Dillon Arrick (Arlington)---One of those rare occasions in which a three-time returning All-State wrestler is somehow the underdog according to the bracket, Arrick was one of the darlings of the 2023 festivities, as he rallied from the #11 seed to finish 3rd under the roof of MVP Arena as a junior...Approaching 50 wins (49-2) in his swan song for the Admirals before taking his talents to Binghamton, the S1 living legend had a tough go at the Eastern States Classic [DNP], but has otherwise been his usual remarkable self!!!....Dobbins, who is the furthest thing from a slouch, will be seeking his first All-State distinction in his third trip to capital, as the 3x Nassau medalist/2024 runner-up boasted a strong 29-6 record and ought to be regarded as extremely dangerous!...NYWN had these two wrestlers back-to-back in the polls, as their rankings matched their seeding!
Quarterfinals: #2 Luke Satriano (Valley Central) vs. #7 Richard Wood (Brockport)---While mama did not raise any fools and we certainly are not about to pick against the defending state king [Satriano]; this bout intrigues us since Wood has turned in such a mind-blowing and/or marvelous junior season [42-1], that all of a sudden, the match-up does not seem as one-sided as one may have originally thought at the start of the year...Both top-10 wrestlers [Satriano at #2; Wood at #9), 2023 state podium finishers [Wood took 7th], as well as multi-time sectional champions, we will not deviate from our gut instinct and will say Satriano prevails; but we certainly are anticipating the S5er making him work for it!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #6 Taylor Beaury (Saratoga Springs) vs. #11 Michael Giugliano (Miller Place)---A tale of two returning state medalists that are going to meet considerably earlier than we would have envisioned back in December, Giugliano (2x State 6th) is the underdog on paper as he goes toe-to-toe with 2023 State 7th, Beaury....Each finding himself on a path of redemption, despite their decorated resumes on the grand stage, neither was able to secure a sectional title in 2024, meaning that there will be added motivation in each corner....This entire quadrant of the bracket being a proverbial meat-grinder, the reward to the winner will be a quarterfinal showdown with third-seeded/2023 Connecticut State runner-up/2024 ESC runner-up, Vincent Tripaldi (Iona Prep) with a shot at the guaranteed top-8 at stake!
Quarterfinals: #1 Samson McKissick-Staley (Pittsford) vs. #9 Tyler Visciano (Smithtown East)---Unconquered this season (35-0), highlighted by a dominant display at the Eastern States Classic, the returning State 5th out of the Rochester area [McKissick-Staley] is sitting on that top line with good season as he has denied the myth of the sophomore slump on behalf of Panther Nation....Visciano, who transformed from 5th in Suffolk in 2023 to the top of the sectional pyramid as a senior demanded our attention and respect when he earned an 8-0 decision in the S11 finals over the aforementioned 2x State placer, Giugliano...If the same version of him that we saw at Stony Brook University appears on South Pearl Street, then all bets are off and he could be on his way to writing a Cinderella story....Before Visciano can even worry about trying to topple numero uno, he must must navigate his way past an extremely capable customer in the person of Section 9/Newburgh representative, Matthew Mercado (also went from 5th to the 1st in the section)....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #3 Joseph Tornambe (Yorktown) vs. #14 Wyatt Boice (Minisink Valley)---The classic Lohud/Mid-Hudson clash, don't let the seeds distort the picture, as this is not going to be your typical lopsided affair...Tornambe, now a three-time Section 1 Champion, not to mention a 2x All-State honoree won the previous meeting 6-2 in late-January, but we never want to sleep on a Minisink Valley Warrior, especially one like Boice who despite only being a freshman, is already making his third consecutive trip to the state tourney behind three straight S9 runner-up outings...Boice was a 6th place finisher at the 2024 Eastern States Classic in a bracket where Tornambe just missed placing. It was this performance that provided the evidence that the upset could happen if the latter brings his "A" to the mats on Friday!
Quarterfinals: #2 Amir Avazov (James Madison) vs. #7 Cael Raines (Churchville Chili)----Flipped in the final installment of our 2024 DI rankings, heading into the postseason, we had Raines (3x NYS Qualifier) sitting in the #7 slot, while returning State 4th, Avazov, was positioned in the #11 spot...Both at or around 40 wins this season, the highlight of Avazov's season was a 4th place showing at the ESC....Raines, backed his way into a berth, as he was forced to win a true 2nd bout after losing in the S5 finals, while his counterpart cruised to yet another City crown...To be frank, the PSAL entry has to be regarded as the favorite; but when you are as battle-tested as Raines, no opponent it beyond your talents!...Note: Just to get to the quarters, the Senior Saint [Raines] will need to first get his arm raised in an evenly-matched round of 16 contest with 10th-ranked/2024 Nassau bridesmaid, Eric Gendlin (Hewlett)!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #4 Te'Shaun Mathews (Niagara Wheatfield) vs. #13 Dino Battisti (Brockport)----A collision of S6 and S5, while there is no denying that the returning DI State 5th for the Falcons [Mathews] has the smart money in his column, we don't want to make the mistake of underestimating a poised foe such as Battisti...Both seasoned veterans in Albany at this stage of their scholastic careers, both are competing at MVP Arena for the third time, as the former [Mathews] is seeking to one-up himself after the previously cited top-5 showing in 2023, while Battisti is trying maximize his final shot at the podium, while simultaneously erasing the memories of an 0-2 appearance as a junior...79-5 between themselves, each is fresh off of tasting triumph, as Mathews repeated in Section 6, while the third time was the charm for Battisti who seized the brass ring after making peace with sectional silver in 2022 and 2023!
Round of 16: #7 Anthony Tresch (Minisink Valley) vs. #10 George Johnson (Iona Prep)---The Junior Warrior, Tresch, being an individual that we covet higher than the seeding committee [#4 in our final set of charts], if not for the presence of #2 ranked/#2 seeded Mason Ketcham, who returned home to S9 after doing two years in the Garden State, the MV junior would likely be heading to Albany as a three-time Section 9 champion, as Tresch saw his two-year reign end in the sectional finals...Failing just short of top-8 status in '23, as he bowed out in the 132-pound blood round as a 10th grader, Tresch has been victorious in 39 of 44 outings this season and should be regarded as a riser that could easily exceed expectations....Attempting to play spoiler will be the Gael sophomore, Johnson, who was a 2022 State Qualifier as an 8th grader while competing in S1, but then missed the 2023 postseason in his first year in New Rochelle...In the midst of a winning streak, Johnson turned some heads at the CHSAA State tournament when he emerged as an 8-7 decision victory over NYWN #6 ranked, Nick DeNatale (Chaminade), in the finale to clinch the lone spot allocated to the Catholics!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #6 Anthony Lofaro (Ossining) vs. #11 Shane Moore (Division Avenue)----Making his debut in the capital city following a runner-up effort at the Nassau County Championships, the Dragon senior [Moore] has suffered losses this season (42-3) to only 2023 State runner-up/#1 seed @145 Liam Carlin (Burnt Hills; 2x at the ESC) and 2023 DI bronze medalist/#2 seed Jesse Vanorden (Wantagh). Otherwise, he has been as right as rain...An 11-seed with a bullet, our honest opinion if that we would be shocked if Moore did not end up on the podium when Saturday rolls around...Step #1 to turning goals into realities will be to find a way to outlast returning State Qualifier/2024 S1 titlist, Lofaro, who with a good weekend is primed to reach the 50-win plateau (46-5) in 2023-2024!!...Moore took 5th at this weight class at last month's ESC, while Lofaro was a DNP up at 160!
Quarterfinals: #4 Jason Kwaak (Brentwood) vs. #5 Luke Greiner (Minisink Valley)---The second and fifth-ranked student-athletes in the final NYWN Large School charts, when the two met at the ESC, Kwaak was able to earn the quick fall (0:32)...However, while the winner may or may not differ in the rematch, we are confident that this is not going to be another sub-1:00 day at the office for the 2x NYS medalist/2x ESC runner-up/2023 Fargo All-American [Kwaak]...Seeded 5th in his NYSPHSAA bracket for a second year in a row, the three-time S9 gold medalist, Greiner, will be trying to shake off an 0-2 slate from 2023 as he goes hunting for All-State accolades in his last attempt!...Greiner was 4th at the Eastern States Classic and sports a 41-4 resume; so no one can refute that when he is at the top of his game, he is FOR REAL!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #2 Matthew Rodriguez (East Meadow) vs. #15 Konstantinos Koufalis (Sr.; Iona Prep)---Two wins short of the podium in his NYSPHSAA debut as a junior last season for the Jets, Rodriguez may be the #2 seed, but the draw did not do him any favors as his opening bout will likely be against 3x CHSAA State finalist/2024 Champion, Koufalis...Both wrestlers 7th place performers at the Eastern States Classic in different weight classes (Rodriguez at 170; Koufalis down at 152), NYWN had each in the top-8 in the last set of polls (Rodriguez #6; Koufalis #8)...Each a first-time sectional champion weeks ago, the winner of this match will be primed to go on a deep run through the field...Considered a potential state medalist a season ago at 145 pounds, the Gael senior never got the opportunity, as he was the bid when he lost to teammate/eventual NYS State 5th, Max Watson, in a winner-take-all CHSAA title match!...All three of Rodriguez's losses this season have come at the hands of Catholic personnel; so the minor mental stigma cannot be ruled out as a factor!
Round of 16: #5 John "LJ" Welcome (Averill Park) vs. #12 Charles Olaechea (Hauppauge)----Focused immensely on rectifying the 0-2 vitae he posted in 2023 in his introduction to the NYSPHSAA tourney will be the 2x Section 2 finalist/2024 titlist for the Warriors [Welcome], as he brings a 33-6 record into the weekend and has been en fuego down the home stretch (14-match streak)....His fellow 12th grader, Olaechea, counters with a 38-4 record and has really come of age in his final year as an Eagle. as he earned the right to be in Albany by winning bronze at the Suffolk Championships...Of note is that NYWN had the Section XI rep ranked in our top-15 (#12) in the final installment; but did not have Welcome listed!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #3 Leo Venables (Carmel) vs. #19 Zane Kropman (Penfield)---Invoking the "blood lines" intangible, if history has taught us anything, it is that when your last name is Kropman, you tend to deliver in Albany...Between older brothers---Parker (3x state medalist) & Cooper (3x placer/2x finalist/2020 champ), the lineage is pronounced and for that reason, we think there could be a few upsets in the cards for the freshman phenom....Wrestling in only 12 bouts this season, Kropman went 10-2, with both of his losses being very narrow blips (4-2, 2-1) to 2023 NYS DI 4th, Landon Lazarek (Hilton)...Thus, the rationale is that if he can hang with one returning 4th/top-10 ranked foe (#7 Lazarek); why can't he do the same against a person of equal resume in the person of 9th-ranked/2023 State 4th, Venables...The owner of a 24-2 record this season, Venables is going to be a hell of a test for the young pup as he was emphatic in winning his third consecutive sectional crown, pinning his way (all 1st period) to the precious!!!....Note: For Kropman to be afforded the chance to gauge himself against the legitimate title contender like Venables, he must first show he can handle 14th-seeded/2024 Nassau True 2nd, Shareef McMillan (Wantagh), who is three wins shy of 40 (37-12) as a junior!
Quarterfinals: #2 Gage LaPlante (St. Francis) vs. #7 Christopher Reddy (Bay Shore)---Spending the majority of the season as NYWN's #1 large school 170-pounder, the 2022 NYS DI 7th/2023 NHSCA All-American committed to the United Military Academy [LaPlante] saw himself plummet to #5 in the polls after taking a pair of losses on the chin en route to a 4th place display at the ESC...48-4 overall as a senior in his first and only year as a Red Raider [transferred in from Starpoint], the imperfections at Eastern States have been the only ones he suffered against NY peers as his other defeats occurred against out-of-state opponents at the Powerade...In the weeks since showing that he is in fact human, LaPlante has looked as good as ever, including avenging his ESC bronze medal bout loss to NYWN #1 Jonathan Hoffman (Kellenberg), by a commanding 7-0 margin to win Catholic gold!!!...While LaPlante was a name all the pundits knew and adored from the get-go, 12th-ranked Reddy has captured the attention/admiration of the Empire State loyalists as he has yet to taste defeat (38-0) as a senior. A testament to the "all in" philosophy, Reddy has credited the decision to bypass playing other sports to concentrate on making the mat his office as the catalyst behind his breakthrough campaign...Note: Just to have the privilege of clashing with LaPlante, Reddy has to first survive a very upset-minded nemesis in #10-seeded Gianni Delgado (Saratoga)...The runner-up in S2 a few weeks ago, Delgado was #2 on our charts in the final installment. So he is not to be taken lightly!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #3 Zach Filip (Minisink Valley) vs. #14 Aidan Gubarev (James Madison)---A definitive bracket buster on the lower half, it cannot be argued that the Warrior sophomore is more than deserving of his top-3 seed following a 10th grade year that witnessed him win just under 40 matches (38-7) thus far and repeat as a S9 titlist. Just falling short of top-8 as a freshman 152-pounder (blood rounder), if Filip hopes to makes that crossover from hunter to hunted, an opponent like the Madison senior [Gubarev] is precisely the caliber of opposition that he will need to prove he can beat...Gubarev, who was seemingly hurt in the seeding criteria by a lack of matches this season (12-1), is a two-time NYC City, as well as the returning NYS 8th; so a victory over him is a heck of a calling card/confidence booster if Filip is able to prevail....Should the pride of the five boroughs throw seeds out the window and spoil Filip's ambition, it likely will set up a "price of admission" quarterfinal with 6th-seeded/NYWN ranked Zach Miller (Islip) who returns to the scene of where he was a 2022 State 8th before injury forced him to the shelf in '23...Whether it is Filip, Gubarev, or Miller, the person who survives this gauntlet quadrant is going to be a bona fide challenger for the berth into the 'ship with 2nd-seeded/2nd-ranked Zach Caldwell (St. Francis)!!
Round of 16: #8 Bryan Aulino (Lindenhurst) vs. #9 Mason Depew (Canandaigua)---Both 2023 State Qualifiers in the same 189-pound bracket, it was the actually Depew who enjoyed slightly more success, as he advanced to the blood round before seeing his tournament concluded. Aulino on the flip, split four matches, coming two wins short of the podium...His only loss this season (37-1) happening in the S11 finals to Miller, Aulino is throwing everything and including the kitchen sink into making his senior season a celebration...Depew, who if not for a guy named Diakomihalis might already be a 2x Sectional champ (instead of a double runner-up), takes to the mats on Friday boasting a 35-4 record after spending the majority of the year up at 215/285. He does not have a bad loss on his resume as all four have come to 2024 qualifiers (2x to Diakomihalis)...Speaking of the youngest of Gina and Ilias's three kids, the winner of this match will get top-seeded/2023 state runner-up/2023 Fargo National Champion, Elijah, in the quarterfinals; and both have an agenda/gripe they can use as fuel as the Cornell verbal commit beat Aulino in last year's state round of 16 and has owned the repeated rivalry meetings with sectional teammate, Depew!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round of 16: #7 Christopher Leggett (Newburgh) vs. #10 Jack MacDonald (Orchard Park)---Far from your typical 10-seed, MacDonald is a returning State 7th who likely would have been awarded a much higher seed had it not been for the fact that he only competed in 18 matches (17-1) and had the misfortune of losing his sectional final contest (to a rival he had pinned one week prior)...Capable of not only shocking 2024 S9 3rd, Leggett in R16, but also #2 ranked/#2 seed/2024 ESC silver, Harrison Aquirre (McQuaid Jesuit), in the quarters, the Quaker 12th grader is a consummate sleeper pick whose abilities exceed the number next to his name....Leggett, who came close to being a state qualifier in 2023 (4th in the section), accrued a 42-6 resume in 2023-2024 and truly illustrated the grit he possesses when he battled his way to a top-4 outing at the Eastern States....Leggett and MacDonald were the respective #6 and #7 ranked competitors in the New York Wrestling News charts; so there is every reason to foresee a down to the wire war!
Quarterfinals: #1 Coy Raines (Churchville Chili) vs. #9 Kamdin Bembry (Cicero-North Syracuse)----There will not be a moments rest for the top-seed/returning State 6th out of Section V [Raines] if/when he does battle with the 2024 Section III king...80-2 combined this season, the thrill of this match is that the 41-0 Bembry is a natural pinner who can and will throw anything with which he comes in contact...The runner-up in on a one bid section as a junior in 2023, the Northstar is fully intent on making up for lost time this weekend, as he earned the trip to South Pearl Street by winning an 8-7 (UTB) barn-burner over returning State 8th/5th-ranked Rocky Files (Central Square) in the S3 finale...The match with Files being the exception instead of the rule, per CNYWrestling, Bembry has amassed 30 falls this season...Ranked 8th in NYWN's last set of polls, Bembry is the bad draw each and every time he is out on the mat, and whether he wins this quarterfinal or not, anticipate him making noise throughout the weekend....It need not be said that Raines (#1 seed/#1 ranked is an entirely different breed of opponent than Bembry is used to seeing, as evident by the fact that he was the 2024 Eastern States Classic champ and complemented the feat by repeating as a sectional titlist...39-2 in his senior year for CC, his only losses have been to 2023 DII State Champ/#1 seed at 190, Tavio Hoose,; and Aquirre in a rematch of the ESC finals...Because Bembry has been at this weight for multiple seasons, whereas Raines has climbed up all the way from 152, the strength advantage likely resides with the S3 entry!...Note: Bembry cannot afford to just focus on a single opponent; in order to even get to the quarters, he will first have to prove himself by overcoming a stiff test from 12th-ranked/8th-seeded/2024 S2 gold medalist, Pat McKinley (Saratoga)!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quarterfinals: #2 Vincent Petzold (Plainedge) vs. #7 Chris Belmonte (New Hartford-SV-UP)----Long regarded by us as the future of the 285-pound weight class in the Evil Empire, Belmonte showcased all of that promise/potential last season, as he advanced to the blood round as a freshman. This year, there his full throttle ascension has continued as he'd generate a 41-3 overall record (two of those losses in UTB), finish 4th at the Eastern States Classic, and narrowly (one of his ultimate tiebreaker defeats) fall short of becoming a 2x Sectional gold medalist....He may be seeded 7th, but it would come as a surprise to no one if when all the cards are on the table, if he is not in the Saturday night main event. This is the degree of talent we are talking about as it pertains to the super sophomore out of S3....Petzold, the two-time champ in Section 8/Nassau County carries a 48-2 record to the party, with both of those faux pas occurring at the ESC (took 7th)...Splitting key matches in each of the past two seasons, Petzold won a 2-1 UTB decision in the round of 16 of last year's state tourney over Belmonte; but the Spartan sensation got his revenge last month at Eastern States, winning 6-1 in the quarterfinals...While we try not to have a rooting interest, after watching Belmonte give prohibitive title favorite/#1 seed/2023 State runner-up, Stephan Monchery (Middletown), his most challenging bout of the season (2-1 in the ESC semis); we would be lying if we did not admit that we'd be keen to the idea of playing it back with all of the marbles at stake!
Quarterfinals: #3 Gael Sanchez (Churchville Chili) vs. #6 Kamdyn Dorchester (Carthage)---Hoping to set up an All-Syracuse area semifinal by pulling the "upset" of his own is the man who upended Belmonte (3-2 UTB) in the '24 Section 3 finale [Dorchester]....Seizing the sectional crown by not only getting the better end of the exchange with #3 ranked Belmonte, but also #2 ranked/Jackson Schwab (3-2 UTB in the S3 semis), there are not many wrestlers that are riding as high a wave as the Comet junior is at the present moment....Tasked with bringing him down to earth will be the champ from S5, Sanchez, who has gotten his arm raised in 36 of 38 appearances as a senior and has not lost in over a month....From 5th to 1st at the sectional level in one year's time, the amount of growth/development made by Sanchez is easy to detect...NYWN pegged the CC big daddy as our #11 in the last release of the regular season rankings!
