Cornell Finishes Second at National Duals; Binghamton Tops Buffalo and More

Here are some notes from the weekend in college wrestling.  More (for example on some of the outcomes from the NJCAA tournaments) still to come . . .

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Courtesy of Cornell Sports Communication) – Nahshon Garrett dominated again at the top of the lineup, Dylan Palacio earned an overtime fall and Gabe Dean won a marathon match against a top 10 opponent, but No. 1 Minnesota's depth throughout the lineup was too much. The Gophers earned a 24-15 dual meet victory over Cornell on Monday evening in the finals of the EAS Sports Nutrition/NWCA Division I National Duals.

Palacio picked the Big Red up after intermission, earning a first period takedown and taking a 3-0 lead after an escape early in the second. His opponent, Danny Zilverberg earned a late second period takedown to cut the deficit to 3-2, then earned a reversal early in the third after choosing down, to take the lead. Palacio was able to escape to send the match into sudden victory tied 4-4. A wild scramble in the sudden victory period saw Zilverberg taken down to his back and Palacio was able to finish him off for the fall. The win momentarily put Cornell back in the match at 17-9.

Garrett had a strong showing to open the dual, falling short of a major decision due to a late escape by Sam Brancale at 125 pounds. But he got the Big Red off on the right foot. Minnesota would then get four straight victories, all from wrestlers ranked in the top eight nationally. Three of those four came by bonus points with two coming in swing matches between ranked wrestlers.

Hofstra at the National Duals

(Courtesy of gohofstra.com) Hempstead, NY – Pride redshirt freshman Jahlani Callender won both of his contests on the day and senior Luke Vaith recorded his 100th career victory but Hofstra dropped two matches to top 20-ranked teams in the 2014 NWCA National Duals at Ohio State’s St. John Arena Sunday. Hofstra lost to 13th-ranked Ohio State, 29-10 in the championship round before falling to 17th-ranked Iowa State, 36-9 in the consolations.

Callender (16-7), from North Fort Lauderdale, Florida, defeated Ohio State’s Randall Languis, 7-5 in sudden victory, and Iowa State’s John Nicholson, 3-2 and was the only Pride wrestler to be a double winner on the day. Senior Luke Vaith (24-5) at 141, junior Cody Ruggirello (21-8) at 149, graduate-student Joe Booth (27-7) at 165 and red-shirt freshman Frank Affronti (11-14) posted single wins in the two contests.

Binghamton Beats Buffalo on Deuel's Pin in Final Bout

(Courtesy of bubearcats.com) BUFFALO, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling won six of 10 bouts and rallied from eight points down to defeat host Buffalo 22-18 Friday night from Alumni Arena. The Bearcats (5-11) seized the win when heavyweight standout Tyler Deuel posted a pin in 50 seconds in the final match of the night.

With BU trailing 18-16, Deuel took the mat and won his 10th straight match - and 13th straight dual match - giving BU its winning margin. Deuel, ranked No. 24 in the latest NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings (Feb. 10), improved to 25-5 overall record, 14-2 in duals. It was his team-high 10th pin of the season.

Columbia Drops a Pair of Ivy Duals

133 pounder Angelo Amenta and 174 pounder Shane Hughes both posted 2-0 records during the weekend, but the Lions lost to Ivy foes Princeton and Penn.  Against the Tigers, Columbia got off to a 9-0 lead, but Princeton rebounded to win the dual 18-16.
