The FILA Junior Nationals are always a unique event to watch because they blend the top up and coming prep wrestlers with some already proven young college wrestlers.
This year's FILA Junior Nationals went down last weekend in Las Vegas alongside the US Open and a handful of Michiganders made the trip west.
University of Michigan true freshman Adam Coon was dominant at 264lbs, winning tournament titles in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Coon went 5-0 with 5 tech-falls in the Freestyle tournament, surrendering only one point on the tournament.
Also winning a freestyle title was St. Johns High School junior Logan Massa, who showed why is one of the best pound-for-pound high school Juniors in the country, winning the 154lb title. Massa's only closely contested bout of the tournament was in the Round of 16 when he won 6-5 over eventual 3rd place finisher Brandon Sorensen, a freshman at the University of Iowa. Sorensen was 3rd at the Midlands Tournament last year and is Iowa's projected starter next season.
Among Massa's wins was a 6-1 semifinal victory over 2014 NCAA Qualifier Markus Scheidel of Columbia University and a 10-0 dominant tech-fall over Ryan Blees of North Dakota, a high school senior ranked #3 in the country at 160lbs by Flo who was a Fargo Freestyle Champ last summer.
DCC grad Kevin Beazley, a freshman at Old Dominion, finished runner-up at 211lbs, losing to Junior World Champ Kyle Snyder in the finals. Beazley won the Greco-Roman title a few days earlier.
Cornell freshman and Lowell grad Gabe Dean suffered an upset loss in the 185lb quarterfinals to Brett Pfarr, a redshirt freshman from the University of Minnesota. Dean then stormed back with 4 straight tech-falls to finish 3rd, ahead of Pfarr who ended up 5th.
Also finishing 3rd was CMU true freshman Jordan Ellingwood, who finished 3rd at 174lbs. Ellingwood scored a 7-3 win over Virginia freshman Tyler Askey who was a Junior Freestyle National Runner-up in Fargo last summer, before losing to eventual champ and NCAA Qualifier Pete Renda of North Carolina State. Ellingwood scored a pin and tech-fall on the back-side to battle back and finish 3rd.
University of Nebraska freshman Tim Lambert, a Forest Hills Eastern grad, finished 7th at 121lbs.

*Note - correction was made from original story. We originally misprinted Sorensen as a NJCAA All-American from Iowa Lakes, however, he was a true freshman at The University of Iowa who redshirted this season.

Correction... Massa did not wrestle Sorenson from Iowa Lakes. Iowa Lakes kid was a 174 pounder this year. He wrestled Brandon Sorenson from University of Iowa.. He went to Denver High School in Denver, Iowa. Sorenson from Iowa Lakes is from a school in Nevada. The track profile gets their results mixed up.
