EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the Windy City Duals hosted by Northwestern University Saturday, Dec. 6. The Eagles (5-2) fell to Princeton, 26-11, before coming back and defeating Cal Poly, 30-7, and Drexel, 22-19.EMU opened up the day in Evanston with two-straight extra-point bout wins over Princeton as Shayne Wireman grabbed an 11-2 major decision over Ryan Cash and Vincent Pizzuto posted his first major decision of the 2014-15 season with a 14-3 win over Christian Innarella.A decision in the 141 lb. weight class and a pin from No. 20 Adam Krop at 149 lbs. handed Princeton the narrow 9-8 lead heading into the halfway point of the dual. Redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip picked up what would be the final victory in the Eagle lineup with his 9-8 decision over Fracesco Fabozzi before the Tigers went on to win the final five bouts of the dual, three of which were extra-point victories.The Eagles bounced back following their loss to Princeton, taking down Cal Poly 30-7 with eight bout victories. The Green and White took the first five bouts of the dual with Wireman, Pizzuto, and Zeerip picking up their second wins of the day. The Mustangs earned their first win of the match at 165 lbs. before Kayne MacCallum extended the Eastern lead to 24-3 with an 11-3 major decision at 174 lbs.Cal Poly garnered one final decision in the dual at 184 lbs., while Anthony Abro and Cole Dillmanpicked up victories in their respective weight classes to help the Eagles to their fourth win of the season.EMU's final dual of the afternoon came down to the final bout with Drexel leading the majority of the match. The Dragons forfeited the 125 lb. weight class to give Eastern the early 6-0 lead, but battled back to take three-straight bouts to get out to a 13-6 advantage going into the 157 lb. match. Zeerip capped off his perfect day on the mat with a 5-3 decision over Noel Blanco to bring EMU within four of Drexel.A major decision from Devan Marry knotted the score at 13-13 in the 165 lb. weight class, but again Drexel quickly took back its lead winning the next two bouts by decision. A 2-1 decision for Abro brought EMU within three of the Dragons before Gage Hutchison pinned Drexel's Joey Goodhart just 26 seconds into the bout to propel Eastern to a thrilling 22-19 victory to close out its day at the Windy City Duals.The Eagles continue life on the road Saturday, Dec. 13 when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Cleveland State Open.
