The weather is creating all sorts of havoc with the schedules for the Region Duals. Some Regions may have already completed their duals before I am able to get these previews up, but that's ok, we will do them anyway. On a side note, we may also run into some weather issues next weekend for State Duals as well, which isn't good.
Region 1
Teams: Carver Columbus, Columbus, Hardaway, Jordan, Kendrick, Shaw, Spencer
Outlook:
Columbus is the king of this Region and there is no doubt that they will be advancing out of the weekend as the Region Duals Champions. They were the Class 3A State Duals Runner ups last year, and while they may be more dangerous in the Traditional format, they wont have any problems this weekend. It looks like there are 3 teams in the mix for the 2nd spot in the Region and a trip to the State Duals. Jordan has defeated everyone in the Region besides Columbus, so they would be the early favorites to finish 2nd. However both Hardaway and Shaw have had close duals with Jordan, especially Hardaway you lost on Criteria 39-39. Shaw did defeat Hardaway 42-38, but that margin of victory is narrow enough to give Hardaway hope for a victory this time around. In their previous matches with Jordan, both Hardaway and HSaw had several forfeits, if they can shore those up, things could get interesting. Jordan did qualify for the State duals last season, and won their first round match, so they do have a little experience for this situation on their side. Regardless of who finishes 2nd, Columbus is the only team in this Region that will be able to make any sort of run next week at the State Duals.
Predictions:
Region 2
Teams: Callaway, Jackson, Pike, Rutland, Westside
Outlook:
Pike, Callaway, and maybe Rutland appear to be the only teams in this Region that have a somewhat close to full lineup, so look for two of those teams to be the participants from this Region that make it out. Pike is solid on their bookends, but get a little thin through the middle. However, they should have enough to cruise to a fairly comfortable victory. Callaway will have a couple of forfeits, but in this Region they should have enough to pull through against Rutland. Jackson and Westside have too many forfeits to compete for one of the top 2 spots. I don't see anyone in this Region picking up more than 2 wins next weekend at the State Duals
Predictions:
Region 3
Teams: Appling Co, Crisp Co, Cook Co, Pierce Co, Sumter Co
Outlook:
With Appling, Crisp, and Sumter fielding teams with 10 or fewer wrestlers, this Region is a two horse race, and with the season that Cook Co is having that race isn't close. Cook has 6 State placers in their lineup and has had several impressive performances, including a 2nd place finish against a very tough field at the Hook 'Em tournament at Lambert. Pierce Co has a rich wrestling tradition, and has been a regular at the State Duals tournament over the last decade or so, but they will be no match for Cook Co this year. Cook has the ability to make a deep run at the State Duals and they should be eyeing a top 4 finish next weekend.
Predictions:
Region 4
Teams: Burke Co, Butler, Glenn Hills, Josey, Laney, Morgan Co
Outlook:
Burke, Butler, and Lane have lineups that consist of 8-10 wrestlers, so they are non factors in the Region Dual tournament. Josey doesn't even have a roster at all, so they are definitely not an option. That leaves us with Glenn Hills and Morgan Co, both of which have full or nearly full rosters. Both teams qualified for the State Duals last season, however they were in different classifications. Morgan Co made a good run all the way to the consolation semifinals before losing to Bremen, and Glenn Hills went 0-2. I see similar results for both of these teams in the State Duals this year.
Predictions:
Region 5
Teams: Carver ATL, Columbia, Lovett, Miller Grove, Redan, Salem, South Atlanta, Therrell, BT Washington
Outlook:
With the exception of Lovett and Redan, the schools in this Region will struggle to have a lineup with double digit weights covered, making predictions in this Region quite obvious. Lovett is a traditional power in the State of Georgia for multiple sports, including wrestling, and they will breeze through to another Region Title. Redan is the only other school that will have enough weights to put out a competitive team that isn't hamstrung by forfeits. Lovett finished 3rd in the Class 4A State Duals last year and will be in the hunt for another top finish this season.
Predictions:
Region 6
Teams: Holy Innocents, North Cobb Christian, Rockmart, Sonoraville
Outlook:
Defending Class 2A State Duals Champions are the obvious favorites in this Region, and that belief was confirmed with a 50-27 win over Sonoraville earlier in the Season. Sonoraville has been in a brutal Region the last couple of years, and missed out on the State Duals last year, but they are usually a fixture at the top of the State Duals results over the past decade. North Cobb Christian and Holy Innocents both have full lineups and either one of them could push Sonoraville a little bit, but not enough to knock them off, and Rockmart at another level than those two teams. Rockmart is obviously one of the favorites for a State Duals title, but it wont be near as easy this year as it was last season. Sonoraville could make a decent run through the consolation bracket, but their ceiling is probably the consolation semis.
Predictions:
Region 7
Teams: Coahulla Creek, LFO, Murray Co, North Murray, Ringgold
Outlook:
This is probably the most competitive Region from top to bottom in the entire classification, so any team is capable of being upset. Ringgold looks to be the favorite on paper, but they were strong last year as well and didn't make it out. Coahulla Creek has multiple wins over Murray Co and North Murray as well as a blowout victory over LFO, this leaves them comfortably in the #2 spot as we head in to Region Duals this weekend. However, with the parity in this Region, it wouldn't shock me to see a little bit of shuffling between these teams. Whichever teams make it out of her, look for them to make some noise next weekend at the State Duals. While I don't think the State Duals Champion will come out of this Region, I do feel that it it possible for 2 teams from this Region to finish inside the top 6.
Predictions:
Region 8
Teams: East Jackson, Franklin Co, Hart Co, Stephens Co, Union Co
Outlook:
Except for a weird 37-35 loss to Hart Co early in the season, Union Co has looked to be the class of this Region. Despite that loss, Union Co does have a solid 47-30 win over Franklin Co, who has beaten Hart twice this season. Franklin Co and Hart had a close 41-33 dual with Franklin Co coming out on top. Stephens Co wont be a factor this weekend as they got beat 72-6 against East Jackson. This Region will definitely make it's presence felt next weekend and I feel that Union Co is a darkhorse for the State Title.
