Breakdown: Wood is the top-seed as a returning qualifier for the Bulldogs at 106 in D1. Kimling is the lone returning state placer here after taking 7th in D4 a season ago. Freshmen McKay, Sensor, and Kohlman are all tough, so it’ll be exciting to see how they fare in their first high school tournament.
Breakdown: One of the deeper weights here with four guys ranked #1 in the state (Smith, Katschor, Zambon, and Swab). Nationally ranked Smith is the favorite here after beating Katschor 5-1 at Brecksville and in the Lowell/Dundee dual last season. Swab and Zambon are ranked #1 at 106 in D2 and D4, respectively. Ramos could also make some noise here, as he is ranked at 120 but down at 113 for GGI. Coyer will be a Freshman to watch.
Breakdown: Haines is the top seed after taking 3rd in D3 a season ago. Ethan Smith is another name to watch as a D1 runner-up at 106 last season. Smith made a run to the finals at GGI last year, including a big pin in the semis over Katschor. Lyric Warner is the #30 Freshman in the class of 2028. Between Cichocki, Orozco, and King, this could be a solid preview into how the D2 state tournament bracket could look.
Breakdown: An extremely deep weight here with state placers all the way down to the 7th seed. 2x state champ Sorrow will be the clear favorite here, as he’s the #5 pound-for-pound Junior in the state. If the seeds hold, Baker and Cichocki would be an interesting semis match, as that could be the preview of the 126lb state finals this year at Ford Field. A storyline to watch will be D4 state champ Logan Gilbert, as he’s up to 126 from 106 a season ago. Sterling and Gilbert would be a fantastic quarterfinal match.
Breakdown: Abbey had one of the best offseasons out of anyone in the state, and he will be the favorite headed into Saturday. Broderick and Warner would be a really good match in the semis, as Warner will look to build on his 4th-place finish at GGI from a year ago. Yurkunas is a top-50 Freshman that will be looking to play the role of spoiler early in the tournament.
Breakdown: While Burns is the top-seed and returning placer, most eyes will be on his teammate Stone Redmon. Redmon is the #2 Freshman in the 2028 class, and this is as tough a tournament as any for a debut. Kimling, Harrington, Moreland, and Ritchie are also returning state placers, rounding out the top-6 seeds.
Breakdown: Two big storylines at 144. The first is Davison holding 3 of the top 4 seeds, with returning state finalist Tanner McDunnah being the #1 seed. The other story to watch is #1 Freshman Beckett Campbell making his tournament debut. He could see senior Dominic Perez in the quarterfinals, which would be a huge test for Campbell to see where he’s at. Avery Lane, Lukas Leonard, and Ayden Keller round out the ranked guys at the weight.
Breakdown: Another weight with four of the #1 ranked wrestlers in the state. Blake Cosby has solidified himself as one of the top guys in the country, so he will be the favorite heading into this year’s GGI. Dallas Korponic and Haylen Buell were also state champs a season ago in D1 and D4, respectively. Landon Moreland is now a 3x state qualifier in D2. Courneya and Riggins were both state qualifiers that were close matches away from the podium a season ago. Although not ranked, Pacheco is one of the top-15 Freshmen in this year’s class, so he will be another name to watch.
Breakdown: Like Abbey, there aren’t many people that do more for their stock in the offseason than Donny Beaufait. After placing at Fargo, Beaufait also went on a run in Super 32 for a solid showing. There is a chance Beaufait could see teammate Amrhein in the finals, another top-ranked Viking. To get there, Amrhein would have to beat D1’s top ranked 157lber in Pacheco.
Breakdown: State champ Owen Segorski is fresh off a 4th place finish at Grappler Fall Classic, and he owns the top-seed at GGI. As the seeds currently stand, 3x state placer Jelinek would see the #4 Freshman in the 2028 class Dominic Nauss in the quarterfinals. Pickford is the other returning state placer at the weight.
Breakdown: 3x state champ Martinez beat Katschor in a close match at MUSAW freestyle state this past Spring, and that will earn him the 1-seed. Katschor is the other state champ at the weight after winning a state title at 157lbs last year. Baldwin took 3rd in D1 last season, so a potential semis match with Katschor will be anticipated. Borders is the other state placer on this bracket after taking 8th in D3 last season. Two other state qualifiers in Stermer and Smith at the 4 and 5-seeds. Stermer gets the nod in seedings with a head-to-head win at the Grappler Fall Classic.
Breakdown: Casey Engle and John Golec are the returning state placers at 1 and 2. Motylinski was a district champ before having to withdraw from the postseason. Someone to keep an eye on is Cameron Savage, as he’s in his first season as a starter for Davison. He picked up a huge pin in the assembly dual over #2 White of Detroit CC in the assembly dual this week.
Breakdown: James Mahon makes a somewhat surprising drop to 215 after winning a state championship at 285 last season. Returning D1 state placer O’Keefe enters as the second seed, while Juan Acosta drops to 215 after winning GGI two years ago. Meeuwsen is a top-40 Freshman in his class, so this will be a test to see if he can hold his own with upperclassmen.
Breakdown: Barynas was a state finalist last season for Jenison, while Logan Russell was in the blood round two seasons ago at 285 for Madison. Pyle had a solid first season in the lineup for Hartland last year, picking up 20 wins for the Eagles.
