Super 32 Preview - New York

The Grappler Fall Classic and Journeymen Fall Classic are both completed, with New York having a great showing in each tournament. Now, 62 boys and 20 girls will be aiming their sights on the podium at Super 32 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Wrestling begins Saturday the 12th and will conclude on Sunday the 13th. Brackets, results, and the live stream will all be available on FloWrestling.

New York had two placers last year at the prestigious Super 32 tournament, but bothCameron Catrabone and Xavier Giles have since graduated. On the girls side, there is one returning placer, and she happens to be the defending champ. Adriana Palumbo will be back this year, aiming to win another belt at 160lbs.

Best Bets - Boys

1. Dunia Sibomana, 113lbs (Long Beach) - Sibomana is seeded 10th in this tournament and has continued climbing the national rankings after a double All American performance in Fargo. Sibomana finished 2nd at the Journeymen Fall Classic last week, and he will look to improve on his 4-2 showing from last year.
2. Gavin Mangano, 132lbs (Shoreham-Wading River) - Mangano's last year of success has him seeded 12th entering Super 32. After winning a state title as a Freshman, Mangano went on to win the NHSCA Freshman Nationals. Mangano is currently NY's top Sophomore in the class rankings.
3. Jason Kwaak, 150lbs (Brentwood) - The three-time state placer has earned the 12th seed at Super 32. Kwaak was a 2023 Fargo All American, and he rattled off three wins to start the tournament last year but was unable to reach the podium. Kwaak, ranked #3 in the New York Senior class, will look to improve on his three wins from last year.
4. Griffin LaPlante, 157lbs (St. Francis) - LaPlante is currently the #1 Junior in New York after finishing 2nd in the state finals this past season. LaPlante's national ranking has helped him secure the 12-seed at 157lbs this year, just two weeks after finishing 5th at the Grappler Fall Classic.
5. William Soto, 106lbs (Newburgh) - Soto's 4-1 performance at the Journeyman Fall Classic has helped him to the #15 seed for this weekend. Soto, who won a NYSPHSAA state championship this past season, is the #2 Sophomore in New York.

Best Bets - Girls

1. Adriana Palumbo, 160lbs - The returning Super 32 champ is currently ranked 3rd in the country at 155lbs, and she is looking to repeat as champ this year. Palumbo became New York's first and only Super 32 champ last year. This past season, Palumbo became Section !'s first NYSPHSAA girls wrestling state champ.
2. Julianna Hernandez, 112lbs - Hernandez just followed up on her NYSPHSAA state championship with a gold at the USAW Girls Midwest National tournament. Her recent success has her ranked in the top-30 in the country and in a good spot to reach the podium at Super 32.
3. Gabrielle Severin, 112lbs - Severin, currently ranked 27th in the country, made a run to the NYSPHSAA Girls state finals this past season. After securing a runner-up finish, Severin entered Section VIII, where she picked up 3 wins.
4. Michaela Thomas, 175lbs - Thomas finished as a runner-up in the NYSPHSAA finals, losing only to returning Super 32 champ Adriana Palumbo. Thomas, currently ranked 29th in the country, finished last season with a 12-1 record in the girls division.
