Team regionals are now completed, and all 32 teams are set for Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. A committee will seed the team tournament on Sunday, so in the meantime, we will give our predictions on what the committee will do.
Keep in mind that these are just predictions, as we are not on the committee that does the seeding. The committee has its own set of criteria, which is some combination of quality wins (wins over other state qualifying teams) head-to-head results, common opponents, and overall body of work. For each division, we give the resumes of the 8 qualifying teams, which will include all losses throughout the season, as well as their wins over other teams going to Kalamazoo. We then provide our prediction for how seeds might play out, as well as some commentary on why it should go down that way.
#1 Detroit Catholic Central
#2 Brighton
#3 Davison
#5 Clarkston
#6 Bedford
#8 Rockford
NR Dakota
NR Romeo
#1 DETROIT CC
#2 BRIGHTON
#3 DAVISON
#5 CLARKSTON
#6 BEDFORD
#8 ROCKFORD
NR MACOMB DAKOTA
NR ROMEO
Prediction: 1) Brighton 2) Detroit CC 3) Davison 4) Clarkston 5) Bedford 6) Rockford 7) Dakota 8) Romeo
Analysis: For the most part, D1 is about as easy as it gets to seed this year. Detroit CC and Brighton both beat Davison. Davison beat Clarkston. Clarkston beat Bedford. Bedford beat Rockford. Rockford beat Hudsonville, who beat Dakota. And lastly, Dakota beat Romeo. It is pretty straightforward! The only question is who gets the #1 seed. On one hand, you have the 2x defending state champs and clear-cut favorites to three-peat this year. However, Brighton is putting together a spectacular season. No, they did not wrestle Detroit CC, Lowell, or Dundee, which likely would have changed the outlook. However, they did beat everyone on their schedule. They went a perfect 7-0 against state qualifying teams this year, which should be enough based on criteria to move them up to the #1 seed.
#1 Lowell
#2 Three Rivers
#3 Fowlerville
#4 Linden
#6 Freeland
#7 New Boston Huron
#8 Greenville
NR Warren Woods Tower
#1 LOWELL
#2 THREE RIVERS
#3 FOWLERVILLE
#4 LINDEN
#6 FREELAND
#7 NEW BOSTON HURON
#8 GREENVILLE
NR WARREN WOODS TOWER
Prediction: 1) Lowell 2) Three Rivers 3) Freeland 4) Greenville 5) New Boston Huron 6) Fowlerville 7) Linden 8) Warren Woods Tower
Analysis: Lowell is the clear #1 seed. They will not, and should not, be punished for their 4 losses to nationally ranked teams, three of them being out-of-state teams. Three Rivers has zero wins (or losses) to state qualifying teams this year. The best argument they have is they beat Plainwell twice, who beat Bay City John Glenn, and BCJG split with Freeland. We leave Three Rivers at #2, with Freeland at #3. Greenville has better wins, but they lost to Grand Ledge, and Freeland beat Grand Ledge. Greenville's wins over Clinton and Whitehall put them at #4. Greenville beat Algonac, and Algonac split with Yale, so Fowlerville's loss to Yale matters. New Boston Huron has two wins over state qualifying teams in D1, which is arguably better than Fowlerville's two wins over state qualifying teams in D3, so Fowlerville drops to #6. Linden's only notable win is over Charlevoix, who is making their first-ever state finals trip in D4. Warren Woods Tower rounds out the seeds at #8.
#1 Dundee
#3 Yale
#4 Allegan
#5 Whitehall
#6 Lakewood
#7 Hart
#8 Williamston
NR Ogemaw Heights
#1 DUNDEE
#3 YALE
#4 ALLEGAN
#5 WHITEHALL
#6 LAKEWOOD
#7 HART
#8 WILLIAMSTON
OGEMAW HEIGHTS
Prediction: 1) Dundee 2) Yale 3) Whitehall 4) Allegan 5) Hart 6) Lakewood 7) Williamston 8) Ogemaw Heights
Analysis: The results mostly take care of the seeds for us, leaving very little guesswork. Dundee is the clear #1, and Yale's wins over LakeVille and Fowlerville will carry a lot of weight. Whitehall's wins over Hart and Lakewood should give them the body of work to move up to the third seed. Hart beat Cedar Springs, who beat Lakewood, so Hart should slide in at #5. Then Lakewood owns the most recent head-to-head over Williamston for #6/7. Ogemaw Heights rounds out the field at #8.
#1 Hudson
#2 St. Louis
#4 LakeVille
#5 Martin
#6 Clinton
NR Charlevoix
NR Roscommon
NR Union City
#1 HUDSON
#2 ST. LOUIS
#4 LAKEVILLE
#5 MARTIN
#6 CLINTON
NR Charlevoix
NR ROSCOMMON
NR UNION CITY
Prediction: 1) Hudson 2) St. Louis 3) LakeVille 4) Martin 5) Clinton 6) Union City 7) Roscommon 8) Charlevoix
Analysis: Hudson should not be penalized for wrestling a brutal schedule and losing to Davison, Dundee, and Clarkston. They should remain #1, and St. Louis has a really solid body of work with a 4-0 record over state qualifying teams, so they should be at #2. LakeVille has a solid win over Romeo, so we predict them at #3. Martin beat Clinton head-to-head, and they could get a rematch in the quarterfinals. For unranked teams, Union City split with Bronson, and Bronson beat Clinton. However, Clinton just beat Manchester, who beat Union City. We leave Union City at #6 based on Clinton's big wins over Allegan and Whitehall. Charlevoix lost to Grayling and beat Benzie Central, while Roscommon beat Grayling and lost to Benzie Central. #7 and #8 could go either way, but we give the nod to Roscommon.
